He is using 10.4 at the moment and he needs to upgrade that to whatever the Mac Updates gives him.

He has a Powerbook G4. I made a typo at the beginning, I thought he had a Macbook.

Oh yeah thanks everyone for the helpful posts.

Upgraded to OS 10.4.9 in the new user account. . . every thing seems to running and working fine! I guess the old account is toast!!

Tell him to go to Version Tracker and get Applejack

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing it restart the computer holding down the command + s

Follow the prompt to type in applejack

Press a and hit return

If there is anything wrong it should fix it.

There is another utility called AppDelete

He should have dragged the Mac Pilot to AppDelete and it would have ripped it out by the roots including pref files etc and put them in the trash.

I have not heard of this application. I wonder what it does?

so glad it worked out for you. but i guess i don't understand how a different user account had a different version of OS X than you had...maybe it was because the telephone people had you do something with the setup disk. i'm wondering if some how they caused you to install an older version of OS X than you were using. did the help store tell you if that is what happened by chance?

guess it doesn't matter really. just glad you are working again. ..|

Sounds like he had purchased 10.4 but he did the updates and when he re-installed from his disk it would have been 10.4 so he would have to do all the updates (or just one) to get him to back up to 10.4.9. The user account doesn't have the OS on it but it would contain library files containing pref files, music, pictures etc
