Mac or PC?

I've owned:

Original Mac with 1 meg external HD-worked as advertised

Mac SE30 - at the time, a super speedy little machine

MacIIx - enjoyed the color monitor and bigger HD, but not really faster than the SE30

Mac 7100 - don't remember too much about it

Mac 8100av - didn't handle av as advertised; a disappointment

Powerbook 140 - b & w

Powerbook 5300 - color; total piece of crap and at $5300, I should have sued

Wallstreet - still use it today, although I hate going back to OS 9

I am currently using a Cube (which has the famous crack in the case - they gave me a new case, but it too developed the crack) It is like my 50 year old cock, it still does the job for me.

My wife uses a 17" I Mac (the one with the "floating" screen. It is still one of the most ergonomically-friendly machines made. You can put that screen at any height or distance from you and never get a neck ache.

I have the original iPod (5 gig), have never replaced the battery, and it goes with me on every trip, on daily walks, etc.

Apple with through some dark years with Skully and their products were awful, but in general, I've been very pleased. BTW, my wife also uses a Dell for some proprietary software work and I've tried it. It's like trying to learn Russian as far as I'm concerned.

Isn't the current MacOS just Berkeley Unix with a thin Mac veneer laid over the top?

(grins, ducks & runs)

That's one of the reasons I switched, actually. Gotta have my command line window. And Unix is much more robust than OS 9 ever was.

Oh, and it's not a thin veneer--more like an impenatrable shield: keeps all the Unix crap away from the noobs.

Mac, I've been using on OSX for a few years now. While Windows isn't terrible, I don't think I'd buy a PC again (not until there are drastic changes anyways). Plus the Apple hardware is so well designed and high quality.

I have no preference. All of the software that I find productive runs only on a PC. Therefore, I only have PCs. For many years, I have built all of my PCs from scratch and I have saved lots of money. All of my machines have been state of the art. I have never had any of the problems that Mac users blame on PCs. Why do they do that anyway?

I truely hate Macs. The last time i had the misfortune of trying to use one was in grad school. Our lab was equiped with only a G5 something or other. I was forced to use it to access the lab's database, fish and herpetology data, etc etc. It would take me 10x as long to get done there what i could do on a windows based machine. I however accept that is likely to do with me learning computers on a windows based machine way back with windows 3.1. But switchign OS's shouldn't be that hard. if it were not hard i think more people would switch. that is why i love knoppix. it's very windows like. i'm using it more and more, but my TV card still isn't work on version 5. lol. so i'm on windows at the moment (since i just got done watching battlestar galactica). plus many linux distros are free.

By the way, i'm a sci fi nerd also. And damn proud of it.

i find that macs work well for media purposes such as working with music, or video editing. and I also use adobe creative suite on there as well

Mac only for me! Unfortunatly, I am forced to use a crappy PC at work. I hate PC's.

Any PC you can buy is made from whatever cheapest part was on the market at the time. That's why they suck and crash so much. Macs are made from much higher quality parts.

I had a PC. Had 3 hard drives crash in 2 years. Lost lots of important stuff.

There's nothing objectively wrong with PC hardware - it's just that the OS which usually comes bundled with it is such a complete crock of shit.

If you wipe the damn thing off and stick some version of Unix on there instead (and there's several out there, it doesn't have to be linux) they run like a dream.

ill probably stick with pcfor the time being since i can getone built for about half the price of an equvilant mac

I doubt a half-price PC would be truly equivalent. Macs use Intel hardware now, and they're competitively priced, so there's no reason for them to be more expensive.
