I'm looking to get a new laptop but I'm undecided about which one to get Mac or pc. I don't really know the differences. Currently I have a Sony vaio that runs windows xp and it's a desktop. I been looking at the MacBook pro. Don't know if it helps but I'm also going to school for interior design and that's the industry that I plan on working with. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Go for the Mac. Most of the designers that I know have a Mac. If you are going to school, you can get a free iPod touch (which can be resold for about $179 to offset some of the cost). I am on a Mac right now, a 6.5 year old Mac that is still running beautifully.

I don't know where you are, but go to the Apple Store and test drive it first.

If cost is no object, get the Mac.

If funds are limited, just put Linux on your Vaio. You'll have a new PC, and it won't cost you a thing.

Yeah that's wat a friend of mine was telling me earlier as well. I'll probably end up getting the Mac pro. Thank you all for the help.

choose mac better

point + all the software you need include in that laptop and if and if you dont like tiger os you still can instal win os in your mcbook

If you're heading into an industry with 3D model design, or similar work I am told a Mac is better.

I own a Macbook Pro and have done for about two years. I absolutely love it. Very streamlined, ready to go once you take it out the box.

autocad runs on the mac? i heard they plan to, but afaik it's not working yet, is it?

funny thing .. the new versions of photoshop run better on windows systems :)

Since you're in school for design, could you consult with a few of your instructors on their bias for one or the other, based on the specifics of what you're doing?

Plusses for Windows machine:

• Cheaper (depending on what you buy)
• More choice of hardware

Plusses for Mac:

• Preferred by the design/arts community
• Can run Windows as well as Mac OS
• Good build quality
• Great after sales service
• Great features that you don't understand until you own one. Things like illuminated keyboard, multitouch trackpad, ambient light sensor etc.
• Plays well with iPod/iPhone if you have one

I would but right now I'm on vacation and school doesn't start like until Agustin or September.

Hmm now that I think about it. The fashion and interior design director/ instructor also has a Mac.

I do like the whole design of it. My friend has one and I really liked it when I saw it. And yes I do own an iPhone.

True, prior to windows 7. After windows 7 launch, doing design and art on a PC is much easier than before. Mac no longer has a superior advantage over W7 in that aspect

• Can run Windows as well as Mac OS

So how is this strictly a Mac benefit? IMO, its an all around benefit, best of both worlds... and you can do it with a Mac, OR a PC

• Good build quality

You say this like it is exclusive to Macs?

• Great after sales service

Depending on where you buy any laptop can determine what kind of service you get from the retailer. But ultimately, with a little knowledge and online support, you can fix just about any problem for mac or pc.

• Great features that you don't understand until you own one. Things like illuminated keyboard, multitouch trackpad, ambient light sensor etc.

You act as if those features haven't been on other laptops before.... My 3 year old laptop that came with vista on it had all those features. They are by no means even close to exclusive to Macs, but very nice features none the less.

• Plays well with iPod/iPhone if you have one

Again, you act as if a PC cannot do this either. I've gone through plenty of ipods, all of which worked flawlessly on my computer. Only issues were with the unbearable software of iTunes, not the actual devices and their interaction with the PC.

The bottom line is that the Mac has, for a while, been considered to be the more 'artsy' OS because it comes with fancy wing dings and programs for video, audio and other media manipulation. And it can do all of these things pretty well, leading to the wide spread of them on campus among art students.

But windows 7 levels the playing field considerably. Mac MAY have a small advantage still over the arts, but as Corny pointed out, software like photoshop works amazing on W7.

If you want a laptop just for your interior design school work, i suggest you talk to professors. Try emailing them, or perhaps email the dean of the department. I don't know how your school handles things like that, but I have talked plenty of times in length with the dean of engineering at my school. Since I'm an engineer, I'm completely PC. A mac would be as useful as a bucket of lard to my profession, but it might be a bit more useful for you. If you enjoy video gaming at all however, you may want to consider a PC. PC is compatible with just about anything, Macs, though they have been getting better, are behind in compatibility for a lot of software.

I was in a similar situation 3 1/2 years ago...

I went with the Macbook Pro and LOVE it!!!

The BIGGEST advantage I've noticed is that I have NO PROBLEMS!!! With my previous Windows machines, I never had any SERIOUS problems; but, it wasn't UNCOMMON to have little glitchy things that required patches, etc...

But, I have the added benefit of my BF being a MAC guy -- so he was able to show me the tricks and differences to make a smooth transition...

I figure that if this laptop lasts 5 years -- I will have gotten a BETTER deal financially than if I had bought a Windows machine -- which historically for me lasts about 3 years...

Best of luck with whichever you choose!!!

ITA.

I would say now, more than ever, there is little difference between getting a Mac vs. PC.

If you have money to burn, get the Mac, but if you want to be conservative with your cash flow, there are various quality PC machines that can suit your needs as an art student, especially now that Microsoft has sought fit to bless the world with Win 7.

The only real significant difference between Mac & PC, is OS X. OS X is pretty and intuitive, and did I mention pretty? But in the end Windows 7 has really leveled the playing field in regards to making up for Vista and catching up with Tiger/Leopard.

I've no intention of participating in a point by point debate with you, other than to say none of my earlier points were supposed to imply anything about Windows or associated hardware, but simple real world facts. The realities are that the arts community prefers Mac, regardless of the potential of Win7. Go to any graphics house, any video post house, any design school, and Mac will be the primary platform of choice. If you want the benefits of both platforms in one machine, owning a Mac is the only way to do so - Hackintosh is not a reliable or practical alternative.

Considering the OPs career path and requirements, I would recommend the MBP as a logical choice.

I'll probably end up getting the Mac pro.

Hold a mo' old bean.

The Mac Pro hasn't been updated in a long time. The current high end iMacs are really outpacing the Mac Pro's. I would recommend going that route.

I have no idea about autocad, Corny... I was only ever told that Macs were better for graphic rendering... who knows?
