I used to be scared of macs until I was convinced to try one. Not looked back since. My friends tell me that the biggest difference they have noticed in me is that I no longer constantly swear at my computer. I finally have a computer that does what I want of it; It acts as a tool to let me do what I want rather than hinder and frustrate at every turn.

Yeah, you're right. More specifically Windows, but since most PCs run on Windows, it's lumped together and the general consensus.

I am the technology manager for a business with 38 windows computers and 12 macs. The macs are the computers I have the problems with. Mostly network (will not stay connected) and crashes.

The problem I have with mac is cost as I can get a similar spec'd windows computer at half the cost of a mac and software. All of the software I need is not available on mac.

Nothing against the mac guys. I have just learned that macs are not the perfect computers people think they are.

fashion accessories and toys don't count as serious computers.

You're right. I wanted a real computer, which is why I chose a Mac.:p

There's a LOT of specs to consider, but when it comes down to it, I would choose PC.

Why? Because PC always has the latest technology out (processors and graphics) and Mac is usually right behind it. Which means if you're a gamer, you want a PC. It'll run a lot smoother and quicker. Macs will have more of the lower graphics and more lag. Youtube videos will load faster on PCs and you can watch 720p/1080p videos on PC faster. (This all depends on your processor/graphics of course) but when you compare PC and Mac at its latest technologies out, (every time) the PC will be ahead. That's just fact. That's always how it's been.

Don't get me wrong though, Mac is amazing also. You just need to get used to the Mac setting if you usually use PC (which I'm sure are the majority).

IN MY OPINION, Mac is better in the sense that it has THE BEST keyboard and MOUSE PAD! (I LOVE MAC KEYBOARD). It's just so nice to type on. It also has nice Microsoft Word viewing. If you're an art-sy type of guy, Mac is the laptop/computer for you because it's more easier and usually the programs, like photoshop, garageband, MUSIC stuff (like fruity loops, logic pro, etc) will just be more easily accessible. So artists of all types (painters, musicians, performers) you probably would like Mac better.

So overall, EDITING wise, Mac wins.
But, PERFORMANCE wise, PC wins.

My brother has a Macbook Pro and I have a HP Envy 14 (PC), so I kinda have access to both.

Obviously, if you're going to get Mac, you don't need to research cause MacBook Pro is the best laptop they offer, but if you want a PC, research on the processors (Intel Core i3, i5, i7) and graphics (GeForce, ATI Radeon, etc.) I would say the best brand for PCs have GOT to be HP and Samsung HANDS DOWN! But go for the HP Pavilions and up; they usually are the most reliable.

Hope this helped. If you guys have questions, let me know.

RE: "If you guys have questions, let me know."

Yeah, I have a question... do you work for HP? The reason I ask is because the well respected Consumer Reports Magazine rated HP as being among the least reliable brands for desktop computers. The only brand they rated lower is Gateway. For laptops, the only brand they rated lower than HP is Dell. And there's a "rumor" going around that computer manufacturers pay employees to open accounts on various forums, retail sites, etc., in order to post "disguised" recommendations for their products.

And here's a $773 HP Pavilion on Amazon in which 7 out of 13 people gave it the worst possible rating:

You can read their reviews for yourself and see the type of problems they reported. Here's an excerpt from one of them:

"On the 13th month (1 month after the warranty expired), the powercord arced and fried the motherboard. This is an extremely expensive fix. We called HP customer service and were told that because the warranty expired a month ago, we are on our own! I googled this issue and found that this is a common problem."

yeah well, you have to justify that investment somehow to yourself :p

PC/other

i have two laptops. Both windows. well atleast one did. the smaller of the laptops runs ubuntu 11.04

No, I DO NOT work for HP or any other computer companies. I'm not that kind of person; I wouldn't recommend anything to help any company to gain an upper hand.
I am just another college student going to school. I DO have a lot of friends that are computer science majors and are computer technicians/experts, who work at Geek Squad (Best Buy) and computer repair shops, and they clue me in a lot of info.

And YES, that is why I'm saying if you want a PC, you GOT to do your research. Not ALL Pavilions are good. And that goes for ALL brands. There's always the crappy/crashy/unreliable laptop. I do a lot of research myself, and am well-aware that HP does not rank well in Consumer Reports. I even read an article a few moments ago that HP is looking to get out of the PC business and lean more towards tablets, because of small profit gains. However, HP has been coming up in 2010-2011. If you look at CNET, Newegg, PC Mag, and most other computer sites, they rated most of the HP Pavilions, ProBook and Envy at 4 stars and higher with good comments/reviews.

Based on my experience, HP has served me (and my family) well. I bought my HP Envy (which is pretty much the PC version of MacBook Pro) on New Years and it has been nothing short of amazing. There are absolutely no problems (except heating, which is on most laptops) and the speed of the laptop is lightning fast. I have an Intel Core-i7, ATI Radeon Mobility 5650, HDMI Port). If you're leaning towards a PC, one thing that's a must is a METAL BODY (like the MacBook Pro, and also the reason why I recommended Pavilions and up).

I'm just more a PC guy. It's easier to use and when I need to get go behind the scenes in programs (like mod-ing or looking into the files) it's a lot more easier to use. PC in my experiences just get my work (and fun) done faster overall. Plus, Apple is just too overpriced!

This is getting off-track, but same thing goes with iPhone and Droid. I would choose Droid any day cause there's a lot more you can do with it. iPhone is very basic when it comes to smartphones. All you have is apps straight-up. With droid, you can mod it, saving battery life, making it run faster (overclocking/underclocking), make it more personal. People think, OMG you HAVE to have Apple cause it's the best! Uhh..no it's not. Apple just has really good marketing and design wise, is a little more classy. I would say if you're not a tech-y guy, go for Apple.

Kind of sad they didn't take the iMac. It'd fetch a lot more than most of the other PCs at the very least. Looters aren't very intelleducated.

yeah well, you have to justify that investment somehow to yourself :p

What justification? My current laptop is one of the most powerful on the market, and runs my preferred operating system. (and I have 7 installed on mine, and I don't like it)

I've never owned a Mac, but I love my PCs. I will admit that Macs are damn sexy looking, but I don't think I'll ever convert.

Ever tried to remove a security chain that's looped through a hole in a 6mm thick piece of aluminium? They didn't leave them because they wanted to - they just couldn't rip those suckers off the display. You can still see the security chains on both machines.

Another reason why Apple is more secure. :-)

Shhhhh :P

.

Mac is overpriced. And once you start it doesn't get cheaper. Apple is not interested in supporting 5 year old hardware and they assume you won't be interested in using it either.

But it just works better than anything powered by Windows.

At work, I use the "Hey wow I can configure it myself!" features of Windows to make it seem more Mac-like. And it is a pain in the arse getting it even halfway there.

Mac user here because virtually all corporations I've worked for and with use PC. ;)

Anyway, to each his own.
