A piece of shit in my opinion, what a waste of product time and development, apple should of made something worthwhile for the world like a tablet mac, instead they followed the trendy idea of mini laptops, im sure some ppl will buy this lemon, its got nothing going for it in my opinion, except maybe the fact its so thin, but thats no real reason to fork out that much money for it when u can get better laptops cheaper.

A total disappointment I'd of love to seen a tablet mac, im sure apple could improve tablet pc's dramatically if they put the effort into it

so nobody cares that it is neither the first really thin, nor the world's thinnest notebook? well i guess that's just the proof that it's just about the brand and nothing else.

recently i also watched job's demonstration. i mean .. he definitely had fun comparing it to other notebooks like the sony ones - just that those, already quite slim notebooks DO have a replaceable battery AND discdrive and all connectors. apples and oranges .. (sic!).

So there was a thin laptop in the '90's. Wonder what speed, ram, size of hard drive and whether or not the screen was as big and the keyboard was full size?

I think many of you are missing Apple's target for this one. Light, small, long battery life between charges. Use it in conjunction with your main computer. Think peeps working on the plane. It will sell well.

As for the Sony being 3/4" at the front and 1 1/4 at the back what advantage is this compared to a laptop that is 1" thick? Let's look at the formula:
.75+1.25=2 /2=1. Mac laptops have been that thin for years.

The big announcement at the keynote speech however was movies for rent.

you have the names, look it up if you like. but it doesn't matter - they were up2date for their time. and since i have an eye on technical developments concerning computers - components always became smaller with time.

the sony X505 had a 1.1ghz Pentium m processor and 512mb of ram when it came out 4 years ago and weighed a pound less and was almost the exact same size

the macbook air is the result of apple telling people what they want rather than listening to what they want everywhere i have been on the web the comments have been the same its just a thinner full sized laptop what people want is about 10inch widescreen with about a 1 to 1.5ghz processor 1 gig of ram something around the size of a hard back book you can put in your backpack and take with you not only that but with those sort of specs it will be cheap enough for most people to get one if they really want it around $US799

no ethernet and only one usb drive is not a forgivable compromise IMO

in every other area, apple has made appropriate compromises (no dvd drive, smaller plug for external displays- that requires an adapter) This things are stuff that I think we could all deal with, for the most part. At least as a secondary machine.

But with only one usb port, and no ethernet and no user replaceable battery, this thing IS practically a pda (like someone else said)

And the whole flip down door thing for the usb port, how long before that breaks off? I'd rather have it be slightly thicker on the side with the ports, besides, it's not like theirs that many of them lol!

However, this thing is DAMN sexy! And it still might make an appropriate secondary computer for some. Including me, but maybe I'll wait and see if they release a macbook air pro or sumthin. (maybe with a sd card slot, and more ports- then I would definitely spring for it)

I also have a macbook and there's no way I would regress (yes I said regress) to the level of the macbook air just to appear trendy.

no ethernet, no optical drive, and no firewire, slower speed, etc

plus more expensive.

just not worth it imo.

The product I was most excited about was the base station with built in hard drive to use with time machine. That is a perfect fit imo. I hadn't used time machine yet because I didn't want to buy another hard drive just for that (already have 2 external firewire drives). But I needed to get a new base station anyway since right now I'm just using an old netgear router. Having the built in hard drive so you can automatically back up wirelessly is pure genius I think. You don't have to have another drive cluttering up your desk and you can still backup even without anything plugged in. This will fix the hassle of backing up for a lot of people I think.

^it might be worth it as a secondary computer, but I wouldn't use it to replace a primary laptop.

I think Apple missed the boat this time. Ultra thin portable laptops are geared towards the business community (compact for meetings, air travel etc) but most business software isn't compatible with macs. Everything else OSX is famous for (iLife, multimedia & user friendliness) is kind of thrown out the window due to the missing superdrive and functionality it brings.

Sleek and thin but essentially useless if you're relying on it for a primary computer.

As a video editor/designer, the Air is pretty useless to me, but I'm not the target. For a guy who travels a lot and needs to fit a laptop in his carry-on bag that has a useable screen size, this is the best I've seen.

Reduction of features is all about compromise for size and weight. This machine will be useless for many, but perfect for some.

You are missing the point. This doesnt replace any of the product line. It is a specialty product that may or may not be right for you. Personally no notebook works for me. They are all too slow. I'm guessing it will appeal more to women.

I'll stick to my 5 year old G4 dual processor tower. It helps keep my feet warm

This is true, I run VMware Fusion on a Macbook and I actually see value in owning a Mac now, I hate to be harsh but for anything serious in computing Macs are bloody useless (software and compatibility wise), they are good for the Arts but if you put Windows on them there good for everything and everything even better than a PC imo, and VMware is bloody awesome I recommend it for anyone and everyone! I am curious as to how VMware will run on a Macbook Air

It seems that you are missing the point its not ultra portable its just a bit lighter and thinner
not only that there are other lappies out there which are similar in size and weight and yet kill the air on specs for the price dell m1330

Is it true that the Air won't have a removable battery and is the same hard-drive as their iPods? Isn't this basically just an iPod w/ a keyboard then?
