Does anyone else think Mad Men is overrated? Everyone seems to be talking about how great this show is. I've watched about 2 discs worth of the 1st season and I don't find the story lines very exiting. I'm curious what the appeal is, because to me this is nothing more than a stylized soap opera.

Jon Hamm is nice to look at, and that is about all I can say so far. I don't like any of the other men on this show.

Is there more to look forward to or am I wasting my time? What do you like or dislike about Mad Men?

Excellent script, acting, direction and the aesthetics cannot be faulted. What more can you ask for of a TV show? May I also add to that, Christina Hendricks is smokin' HOT!!

Not over-rated at all.

A near perfect depiction of life circa 1960 or so.

excellent acting. mind-blowingly gorgeous people, wearing mind-blowingly gorgeous clothes. wonderfully subtle writing.

and yeah, it is a soap opera... the most sophisticated and enjoyable soap ive ever seen.

but i have to say, mad men gets off to a slow start. i took me about 10 or so episodes to really get into it, which is a very long warm-up phase. until then, ive mainly been watching for the costumes and sets. but by the time the first season finale came around, i was completely in love.

I'm glad to hear it picks up. So far this doesn't even come close to "The Sopranos" or any of the HBO series. None of the episodes end with any sort of cliffhanger. I think there should be more to a show than just the wardrobe and set style, and the writing for this type of show seems really weak. This is like watching "Thirtysomething", especially those god-awful scenes showing Don Draper's home life with his wife and kids.

I will agree that John Hamm and a couple of the women on the show are gorgeous, but it's not enough to hold my interest. The rest of the male actors on the show are very unattractive and their characters are one-dimensional. They way people from that era are depicted is a bit absurd. People were pretty much the same as they are now, except instead of being sanctimonious about not being a racist or recycling or whatever meaningless moral absurdity they're able to come up with, they just had good manners, which actually works better.

I just don't feel that Mad Men is as groundbreaking as everyone makes it out to be. While the 1960-era New York advertising culture is an inspired setting and the period details are fun to observe, the show's storytelling essentials--its characters and situations--amount to standard-issue soap opera.

I never saw the first season, I keep waiting for the dvds to go on sale, under $20. I watched the second season and loved it. One of the ad men is gay, I think the Italian guy, Salvatore, so that helps. But you may have a point bigdaddy, it is really good, but maybe not as great as everyone says. Still, I will watch season 4, starting soon. I love Peggy's character.

Season 1 & 2 are on sale at Best Buy for $19.99 this week.

well, mad men doesnt "pick up" exactly. its more that i experienced it as a "grower". i needed some time to adjust to its rhythm and style before i could truly appreciate it. the show really has its own rhythm... there are never any cliffhangers, because its just not that sort of show. instead you have characters subtly getting fleshed out, and every now and then, the writers drop a bomb out of nowhere, and then its truly affecting. and the writing might be not to everybodys taste, but i percieve it as truly sublime.

ok, sorry, but this is absurd.

amazing acting and complex characters

add amazing writing with great sub text and a great production and you have
one of the fineist series ever written for television.

eM:=D:

I have to agree it is a great show. I haven't been a loyal watcher but I saw last season and parts of the other seasons. The show can get dark! I love the look of everything back than. It's so sterile looking and everyone is screaming for some filth, lol.

I don't watch the show but Jon Hamm is perfection (expecially when he leaves his 5 o'clock shadow). he is everything I look for in a man; older, tall, dark hair, just the right amount of hairiness and fit. I can honestly say, I might literally be able to kill to be sandwiched between him and Eddie Cibrian :-).

Just look at that (!). He could make me go gay.

jon hamm does nothing for me actually. i was going to watch the show but now that there's a few seasons done - it's too much of a commitment to take on.

^ bahahahaha. awesome. he was cute in his arc on 30Rock but just "cute". i don't find him sexually appealing in the least. he seems really asexual to me for some reason.

I think the show has Retro appeal and great STYLE. Is it Fabulous ? NO ! But great escapist entertainment considering our options.....

I have a feeling Jon Hamm might be gay, having had the same live-in "girlfriend" for 10 years. Remember Rock Hudson.

I am 100% positive he's completely straight but boy do I wish your were right. Tell you what I'd get me some of that if it was the last thing I'd do before I died.

Jon Hamm looks like a poor man's Robert Downey Jr.
Are you kidding me?! Robert Downey Jr. looks like a chimpanzee.
