I can to to the Texas Roadhouse to eat a ribeye with two sides for about $15 USD OR

go to a meat and three place to eat for about $8.00 USD. I'll be drinking water of course.

That's about £19.
It might be quite expensive but you haven't told us what the dish was - meat & salad could be anything from spam and lettuce to venison stuffed with foie gras.

Average price for a restaurant main meal in Manchester is about £8 - £15.

Have to admit that i do find it annoying when an eaterie charges ludicrous prices for their food. I ate in one recently in Lytham which charged £1.90 for a single slice of toast.

I won't return.

It varies greatly in San Diego depending on where you eat. If you're talking about dinner, an average, casual restaurant is going to have entrees starting around USD $10. Just for your main dish - the whole meal is going to be at least USD $20 per person at the cheapest sit-down restaurant. But if you're rich, you can go out to dinner and spend as much as USD $100 per person, even higher if you start adding wines. Or for cheap eats, go to a taco shop and get a big fat burrito for $4 and it will fill you up, or a quality hamburger for $7.95. There are cheap fast-food chains but I don't consider their food high-quality. The best deal by far is the food court at Costco: hot dog and drink $1.50; chicken bake sandwich $2.99, carne asada bake $3.99; whole pizza $9.99, caesar salad with chicken $3.79, and so forth; half the prices restaurants would charge for the equivalent and you don't have to be a Costco member to buy at the food court.

I was going to post but the above is pretty much true for the Southeastern US too.
Lots of chains here are offering 2 for deals. O'Charlie's has two entrees for 15 dollars. Applebee's has two for 20. Drinks are extra and added to those figures. But, water is generally free. Plus the tip is not included in most cases here, so you'd have to add that as well.

In an "inexpensive" restaurant, like a step up from Denny's but a step down from tablecloths, I expect to pay $10-$15US...my chicken-fried steak at Buttercup last night was $11.95. For fancier restaurants, with tablecloths and/or things like coulis and remoulades on the menu and/or fresh seafood, I'd expect $20-$25. Higher than that and it has to be some kind of unusual experience involved... like weekend before last I took my best friend to dinner for her birthday at this really neat small restaurant that's on its own floating island in the Bay, and the entrees were $35... but that included the shuttle boat from Pier 39 and really fantastic service.

Since everyone is from different places, I wondered about the exchange rate.

So what I got was:
30 Australian = about 30 in the US and Canada
It's about 47 in pounds and 23 in New Zealand and about 21 Euros.

Assuming the online exchange rate converter I used is correct.

Some of the chain restaurants have advertised specials ranging from a down low of 12 bucks to about twenty for a whole dinner(plus tip). Some of the independent joints actually cook the meals on-site instead of just warming up what comes frozen or freeze-dried, etc. from a chain's warehouse.

It's hard to say. There's some great ethnic joints which have great meals for $7 up to $50 or $80 in other places. But probably $15 - $30 is a decent range

Same in california, except I don't do buffets. Very rarely do I go to a place that is more than $15. Vegetarian food tends to be a little cheaper. The last time I spent more was at a mom and pop Polish restaurant.
