Governor John Baldacci of Maine has formally put the state's marriage equality law into the hands of voters after he signed a measure allowing a referendum on it in November. Anti-gay marriage supporters gathered nearly 100,000 signatures for their petition to get an initiative repealing the law on the ballot, far surpassing the number required
However, gay activists are confident about the campaign to protect marriage equality. They are heralding the first ads to go on the air as

Another ad was released today by "NO on 1 / Protect Maine Equality."

I really believe Maine will keep marriage equality. No on 1 is already doing a great job at this.

These ads are brilliant. They are what the No on 8 campaign should've been broadcasting. I actually don't think the Yes on 1 side has even released any ads as of yet (and from what I've heard they are struggling with their leadership)!

I wish I had the resources to give No on 1 a huge donation because if they can keep marriage equality it will be a great blow to the NOM.

However, being that I live in Washington State all my extra money is being used to prevent our own equality measures from being overturned. I think there is a pretty decent chance in WA State. If we can win in WA State and Maine it would be great.

I have no doubt at all that we will win in Washington. A poll back in 2007 showed that 77% of Washington residents support domestic partnerships.

Isn't there still a chance that it won't make the ballot because a lawsuit is pending which would result in thousands of signatures being tossed out?

Voters in Maine will face a ballot initiative on November 3 that if passed will repeal the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state. "Protect Maine Equality" (ProtectMaineEquality.org) is the statewide organization fighting the initiative.

Just heard that polls have shifted in our favor, 50% No, 41% Yes, and 9% undecided. It was also so far the largest poll sample taken (808 registered voters, as opposed to 400 and 600 in the other two).

Excuse my ignorance, but when is the for real vote? When will we know what happened??

Opposition to ballot questions grows

A poll released Monday suggests that supporters of gay marriage have pulled further ahead of opponents, but voter sentiment for two tax-related initiatives may be souring as the campaigns enter the final week.

In the most closely watched race on the Nov. 3 ballot, Question 1, the latest survey results from Portland-based Pan Atlantic SMS Group show the effort to repeal Maine’s same-sex marriage law trailing.
Roughly 40 percent of respondents indicated they would vote to repeal versus 52 percent in support of allowing same-sex couples to marry. That is a slightly larger gap than a Pan Atlantic poll from earlier this month.

This is a vile perversion of "democracy." There should never be a situation in which the majority are given carte blanche to vote on the rights of a minority. That's why the judicial system exists.

Oh geez, they're going the same way the California ads did -- making sure they say "family" every other word and not using the words gay or lesbian at all. I really don't think that's the right approach... but let's keep our fingers crossed.

I just think it would have been more effective to let one of the families speak for themselves. Show 2 dads or moms with their kids and let them explain what this law would do to them. Get a real "poster child" gay family with very respectable looking parents and adorable kids.

Well their ads have done something that they never did in California: show gay families!
