Opinions are almost evenly split when it comes to a bill before Maine lawmakers to allow same-sex marriage, according to new public polling data.

There is some suggestion in the Statehouse that lawmakers might want to send the question directly to voters in a November referendum.
After today's hearing before the Judiciary Committee, lawmakers will work on the bill, and bring a recommendation to the full Legislature.

If the bill is supported, it's unknown whether Gov. John Baldacci would sign it into law. An opponent of gay marriage in the past, Baldacci has said he is keeping an open mind.
And if the bill passes and becomes law, opponents have said they will file a people's veto, putting the issue before voters this November.

Fire alarm? Oh no...

That is the weirdest fire alarm I have ever heard.

All fire alarms I have ever heard seriously scare the shit out of me. They aren't that soft and are 10x as loud.

Those "anti" speeches were just bizarre.. they were weird, paranoid, meandering messes.

One woman stood up and said she was against gay marriage because she was a nurse and had seen lots of anal injuries.

Lots of the anti arguments seemed to just be based in fear and the distaste of having to be equal to the faggots.

Maine is a liberal state and gay marriage law will ultimately be passed by the legislature.

Marriage equality in Maine is coming closer to reality as a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage is headed to the full state house.
The house judiciary committee voted Tuesday that LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom, "ought to pass." The legislation moved forward with a vote of 11 to 3.
State representative Mark Bryant, a Democrat from Windham, told the Maine Broadcasting Network, "I just see it as you need equality, and it wasn't there. And I think this gives us a step in the direction of equality and…nondiscrimination." If Maine legalizes same-sex marriage, it will be the fourth New England state to do so, leaving just New Hampshire and Rhode Island out of the marriage-equality stronghold. New Hampshire's senate plans on taking up a marriage-equality bill on Wednesday.
