Male Cheerleader Suspended For Kissing Another Boy

Outrageous. Even if the boy is restored to the cheer team, the family should still file a civil suit against the district for such discrimination. No public school suspends a student for kissing another student. The fact that it was caught privately on camera is even more disturbing.

I like one of the user comments for the article below:
"Aside from the silent minority who lives there, Texas is the place where civilization goes to die."

I'm not a fan of PDA, but the situation is ridiculous. When I was in high school all of the m-f couples would be making out in front of their class doors. So, I'd think two guys doing that discretely shouldn't have been a big deal.

He got suspended for kissing someone?!?!?

That is ridiculous

As one person observed on the site mentioned by Metta:

If they suspended him for kissing another guy, and the school does not have a precedent of suspending straight students for kissing then the kid has a lawsuit on his hands for discrimination....

I'm looking forward to the case and hope that the kid walks away with damages.

The handbook cites "policies and procedures to prohibit and promptly respond to inappropriate and offensive behaviors that are based on a person's race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability, or any other basis prohibited by law," but does not specifically mention sexual orientation.

"There aren't any laws in Texas that protect on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, unfortunately," Chuck Smith, Deputy Executive Director of Equality Texas, an advocacy group, told msnbc.com. "The issue here is whatever is in the school's code of conduct, and whether it's being enforced equally [for gay and straight students]."

Yeah.

Let's wait and see.

But without the protection of law, it sure smells like one more pile of hypocrisy.

Oh my. At one school I worked in, students were caught going for it right outside the general staff room, and I don't mean kissing! In the garden bed, they were.

Right. Being a male cheerleader wasn't a clear indication of his sexual indication. He had to kiss a boy for them to find out.

The thing I find most inspiring about this? The parents are backing up their gay son! And, on top of THAT, we're talking TEXAS!!! :hurray: (!w!)

YES! The world is (slowly) becoming a better place!! (group)

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz :D

Yes, it did start elsewhere, and has been going on for eons. However, the very fact that it has taken some hold, in a place such as Texas, is, truly, a very heartening thing to behold! We're making some Real Progress! (!w!) (group)

The district has a non discrimination policy and a spokesman said they do not suspend students for kissing. There's obviously more to the story than we're being told.

It would be prudent to wait and see what the facts actually are before making a judgment.

You're always right there to hold out hope that oppression can be justified.

I would assume a male cheerleader was seriously hetero -- why would a gay guy like to do routines where he gets his hands on girls' panties and thighs?

at least he has scruples, and he wasn't kissing something totally disgusting! imho
