Malls and department stores closing down at alarming rate

Malls were great!

You could go there and buy stuff, and you got it the same day!

Yes. ;) And you can try and see and compare the "dimension" right away
One of hassle from online shopping is ..how cumbersome to "wait" for item you purchased to arrived at your door. However, not too worrisome after I joined Amazon Prime

However, in some markets they're flourishing:
Simon's Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto (Silicon Valley) is expanding.
The Australian powerhouse Westridge is expanding their premier property in Los Angeles in Century City (adjacent to Beverly Hills), and building a new mall at Topanga Place. They're also expanding in San Diego, San Jose (Silicon Valley, again) and Bethesda, Maryland (Washington D.C., always prosperous). And they're adding another mall outside of London, and a new one outside of Milan.
Macerich completely redid their Santa Monica property a few years ago and it's booming.
In the existing malls that are being renovated and/or expanded, the down-market tenants are kicked out, replaced by up-market ones.
I read in today's NYT that Tehran is experiencing a boom in the construction of luxury malls, where prosperous Iranians can shop in peace and feel a part of Western consumer culture.

It's like if the mall isn't destined to be "super luxurious" then dont bother to build them at all ^^

The MOA isn't hurting for business. People fly here just to shop there. It has movie theatres, dozens of restaurants (not counting several food courts) A comedy Club, Giant Aquarium, there's alot to do and see................I just don't want to be around jillions of people.

You're such an anti-social -_-

Nothing stays the same
Just because a Mr Selfridge style store was successful 100 years ago does not mean it is or should be today. Retailers HAVE to move with the times, adjust their methods of selling to stay in the game.
I have little sympathy with stores/brands that fail to keep abreast of modern buying methods. They don't deserve to stay in business if they can't compete
That said, it is sad that lots of small independant stores are closing but that is simple market economics

And..I also heard from news recently: By 2016 the 1% of world richest will inherit 50% of world wealth for themselves and the caste will be staggering from rich to poor..no more middle class!!
One of reason, it's no brainer that conglomerates like Walmart and Macy (for samples) sweep away all their competitors, they build their own empire. No more "pure" capitalism anymore..folks :(

Not anti-social at all.........just picky about where and with whom I spend my time.

I went to a mall where I used to hang out with my friends a number of years ago.
The food court is the only area worth visiting, except it's missing my favourite place; a pizza shop run by genuine Italians. I've noticed that people just aren't interested in pizza anymore, like they used to be.

Back then, there was also two department stores; a Wal-Mart on one side, and a Zellers on the other. Now, Target is occupying the former Wal-Mart space... which Zellers briefly moved to before it closed. There is no music store anymore; CD Plus used to be one of my favourite places to go. There were once several other interesting stores there, but a lot of them have been replaced with crap; mostly clothing stores.
The movie theatres are really the only reason to go to that mall anymore, and even theatres aren't doing so well these days, especially ones that don't have IMAX-like screens.

Also, it was just after rush hour when I went, but it wasn't very busy. That's usually when the place is packed to the rafters! Except for the food court, it was pretty sparse.
It's disappointing to see a once cool place go right downhill, especially in such a short period of time.

I am positive there must be articles some place in the net that I still haven´t found talking about it, but that clothing thing, with little stores popping up everywhere, in BCN for example, where there used to be different sort of businesses, and the surge of true global evil empires like Inditex (Zara), is surely tied to some textile bubble which has been overproducing at low balance sheet costs and huge social and environmental ones during the past, say, twenty-five years.

I didn't need to read you American people commenting on all those annoying clothing stores for shopping mules because I have always known that whatever reaches the Iberian shores is only the expansive wave of some big shake in the core of civilization, in the Anglo world.
