...................but decides not to milk it.

Seriously members, Last month a man in California finds $140,000 bucks in unmarked bills and decides to turn it in to the police and gets a $2,000 reward from the bank.

What do you think, did he do the right thing or should he be considered a sucker?

And what would you do if you found the $$$

Um, I would keep it. I wouldn't think of it as a bad thing, I would think of it as Karma "rewarding" me for all the shit I had to deal with. If anyone knows what I have to go through with on daily basis they would understand.

Reminds me of the movie American Gangster without the druglords, not quite the magnititude of money, and he's not a cop.... so, really just the part where he turned in the money.

I would have probably turned it in too. Partly because i feel you should work for what you get, which in this case the man clearly did not. And i would have a guilty conscience for a long time.

In the same vein, karma could come back and kick your ass. You don't know whose money that is. For all you know, it could be an old lady's prescription money.

$140,000? Thats one hell of a prescription.

I'd do it the smart way...put an ad in the paper stating I'd found a certain amount of money in a certain location and to contact the police to claim it. If the one who lost it had it legally to start with, they'd contact the police, otherwise it'd be mine in 30 days.

Those who would keep it -would you claim it on your taxes?

There's no way I could keep it. I know it would eat at my conscience. I might try shaming the bank into donating half of it to a charity of my choosing, however.

so many people would return it... yeah right... I'd keep it.

I agree

Gosh! At times when I find a 5 or 10 dollars on the street I'm not going to run to the cops and say "Officer, look what I found, can I keep it? , he's going to look at me as if I was nuts or worse he might take it and spend it on donuts. :p

The legality of the situation is defined by the amount. £5 or £10 is legal, I think all the way up to somewhere like three figures. I'm not certain on the exact amounts and I'm not certain on how the US government does it, but I know that if you found £70000 here (the Sterling equivalent), if you kept it, it would be a crime. Getting £1000 for giving back someone's possession is more than fair when you consider that it's not your money, you didn't earn it.

When it's a low amount, it'd cost more in police time and resources to retrieve the owner, and they'd not be able to provide proof that it's theirs - which is why you can keep it. An amount like that, however...

Look, if you stole a large sum of money, all you'd have to say is "I found it on the street. Your client must have dropped it, Mr Lawyer. It's mine now." if 'Finders keepers' was the rule.

Look, dropping the money would be a mistake. So would be not locking your doors.

If you walk into a house with unlocked doors and take stuff from it, is it any less of a crime? You're taking advantage of a mistake to claim someone else's possessions, that you didn't work for, and that you stumbled upon by chance.

They say most thieves are opportunists - they see the possibility of money, and they take advantage. Exactly what you 'Finders Keepers' guys are doing.

I disagree with your post, first of all the $$$ was found not stolen, you can't compare the two with your examples.

What about salvagers and treasure hunters who find valuable things all the time, should they be locked up, No.

Rest assured if your careless to drop your wallet right after payday and it has no i.d. and I find it.........Well! You do the math. :p
