Strangely enough, the diagnosis that most concerned Timothy Ray Brown in 2007 was acute myeloid leukemia. HIV has been increasingly thought of as a manageable disease, though certainly a terribly burdensome one. What brought the 42-year old Brown under the care of Germany's Charite Universitatsmedizin Berlin hospital was the more immediate threat his cancer posed.

The treatment Brown underwent was aggressive: chemotherapy that destroyed the majority of his immune cells. Total body irradiation. Finally, a risky stem-cell transplant that nearly a third of patients don't survive—but that appears to have completely cured Brown of HIV.

I wasn't sure if I should post this in CE&P or Health and Wellbeing, but this is incredible news, I just had to share it with someone.

It's interesting. A very expensive and difficult treatment, but interesting. I hope the research continues.

I've heard people say that the "cure" has been around for decades, but they were not releasing it because aids was/has often been thought of as a way to let "fags" die off, that and also just to control the numbers of the general population. Conspiracy theories aside, good news, none the less.

This is old news to be honest. I'm curious why there's a resurgence of this on the web. But yes, he got extremely lucky. The glycoprotein abnormality which cured him of HIV is found in only around 11% of Eastern European's and thats it. The virus cannot bind to this key receptor protein on the surface of T-cells which effectively make HIV ineffective and won't have any effect to the host. However he does still have it in him.

Now personally clearing a guy to get his immune system wiped while he's immuno-compromised with HIV is slightly difficult. Especially since you could be effectively killing him faster.

The conspiracy theory's about HIV/AIDs are extremely saddening. AID's deniers and those who claim that pharmaceutical companies are happy they have HIV it really makes me sad. They really don't understand that HIV is a virus which mutates so very fast that even if you created a 'cure' it wouldn't work for everyone.

This seemed to be too good to be true, but I hope not. Let's just hope this case speeds up the process to finding a cure that will be helpful and affordable to most people affected by HIV.

This case in particular won't really do much. He was cured because he received a donation from the genetic lottery. Not to mention he's still HIV +. So in terms of actually stopping the spread of HIV this is almost irrelevant a discovery.
