https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kansas-man-wrongfully-imprisoned-23-years-no-compensation-from-state/

When Lamonte McIntyre was exonerated for a double murder in October, he walked out of a Kansas prison with a clean record – but not a dime to his name, reports CBS News' Dean Reynolds. After losing 23 years of his life behind bars, the state is offering him nothing.

Kansas is one of 18 states that offer wrongfully convicted prisoners no compensation at all upon their release.

This is why we don't stand for your anthem. I'm tempted to do more reading about exonerations, wrongful imprisonment cases et cetera but I don't think I have the belly for it tonight.

He got bed and board.

Please do not harass, threaten, stalk, spam, or otherwise abuse other users.

Not the place for it, Deandra.

Cormac did none of that, he just gave a smartass response. But you did by not using his correct username. Many people have received infractions in CE&P for that.

Re: Man wronfully imprisoned for 2 decades won't get jack shit from the state

Yeah this is pretty disgusting, the state owes him and the detective needs to be arrested and imprisoned. But I would be surprised if that happend.

Re: Man wronfully imprisoned for 2 decades won't get jack shit from the state

This is awful and you can bet there's going to be some law suits that come from it.

It won't happen, cuz "the justice system isn't perfect."

The smartass response is textbook passive aggressive baiting (I dare you to tell me it wasn't) which isn't supposed to fly in CE&P. The infraction system itself is so broken that it's not a viable resource for right/wrong here. Twice in the past week I've seen Belamo use the terms *"spics" and "niggas" in a playful manner, I was given an infraction for referring to myself as a nigga soo.... there's that. Anywho, back to topic. :)

*Mods this isn't meant that he should get an infraction, it was just an example

Judging from his attitude, I don't think so. He seems to want to put all of this behind him and is actually coming across as actively surpressing it, wouldn't surprise me if this ends in suicide or a string of DUIs or domestic violence arrests. Not many people can serve that much time for shit they DID do and come out unscathed, let alone have your formative adult years stolen by the state and, because that isn't sinister enough, tell ya "Good luck buddy" upon release. I hope he does lawyer up and sue the shit out of Kansas, precedents need to be set for all wrongfully imprisoned people, which people forget there are still a lot of from the Civil Rights era protesters up to the war on [STRIKE]black people[/STRIKE] drugs. We're still seeing lots of cases being dismissed, people being exonerated by DNA evidence after serving years and years and these gross violations of civil rights (and basic decency) don't really seem to bother Americans because our culture is "jail jail jail prison prison prison" it's our answer to everything.

I think it's a sticky situation either way, which proves our justice system is beyond broken.

Wrongful conviction and imprisonment should automatically come with compensation by the state for stolen lives. If states knew that they could face payout for wrongful conviction and incarceration....they might be more careful to avoid it.

They won't, so they don't. I've filed this under "Things people don't care about because it doesn't affect them, although there will be hell to pay if it ever happens to a friend." That folder is so full the edges are starting to tear. ](*,)

36% of the 50 states do not offer compensation for wrongful imprisonment. So, even if Lamonte was James Sheffield, he would not have received compensation. The problem is the system, not the colour of Lamonte's skin.

Re: Man wronfully imprisoned for 2 decades won't get jack shit from the state

He should be revered. He not only lost 23 years of freedom and all it offers, he spent 23 years trying not to lose his innocent mind.

Re: Man wronfully imprisoned for 2 decades won't get jack shit from the state

There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that you can compensate someone for losing that much of their life.

But I'm sure that a bank account stuffed beyond capacity would be a good start.

OVERZEALOUS prosecutions are way more prevalent in this country than most people realize.

Stories like this make me SICK!!!

I know your history. We had the same one. We had slaves. Britain had slaves. The Commonwealth had slaves. Great Britain abolished slavery in 1833. The Commonwealth, including what was to become Canada, followed suit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Racism happens in the US because it's allowed to happen. It's illegal up here. Even standing on the street corner and talking about it is illegal. It's considered 'hate speech'. It's been said by some here that it is censorship. It isn't. You can still say whatever you want but, if it's determined to be 'hate speech', it's punishable by law. And that applies to everybody - even government officials. Our government doesn't get away with the hatred your officials promote. They're brought to task for it.

What does that mean? if you can't even talk about it without going to jail, how do you know who is a racist? Do you turn each other over to the police if you hear a racist comment? I assume there must be a standard of what is racism posted publicly so you can all know what is illegal.

fabulouslyghetto Is correct. All the research says that given the same crime, the black guy will consistently draw the harsher punishment. It IS illegal to discriminate on the basis of color, but that is difficult to prove on a case by case basis when the act of discrimination is institutional discretion afforded to Police and Prosecutors and Judges.

The problem is that the attitudes that promote this aren't overt, cross burnin', sheet wearin', dramatic displays of racism - like you no doubt want to criminalize. The attitudes are ingrained and I guarantee you that a bunch of the people that have them don't think they are racists in the first place.

That is what "white privilege" does. All us white people get the institutional benefit of the doubt, no one else gets. Even brown people can slip into participating, giving the white lady a break, assuming the black one is on crack.

That said I would say to fabulouslyghetto that the system isn't corrupt, it's functioning as designed. The system was designed to protect the white status quo, and that's exactly what it does.

But there is hope, things get better in fits and starts, slowly.

We know what 'hate speech' and 'hate actions' are. You know what they are, too. But up here, there are laws against it. That's why Fred Phelps wasn't allowed up here. That's why the KKK don't walk the streets in white robes. That's why the white supremacists don't march through downtown Toronto carrying tiki torches. That's why politicians resign for obvious racist comments. The same goes for racist actions.

We don't tolerate hate speech. It is not protected by 'free speech' up here.

It's simple common sense. Not rocket science.

LOL there are laws against "it" down here. None of those people or things are the cause of what fabulouslyghetto was talking about.
