I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but the owner of Manhunt donating to a campaign that seeks to stifle gays just about every way it can seems odd. I can understand why the gay community is outraged.

Gay business owner's McCain donation riles blogosphere

So writes Bilerico's Bil Browning in a post, one of many this week, condemning the discovery of a recent $2,300 donation made by Jonathan Crutchley, co-owner of gay cruising website Manhunt, to Senator McCain's presidential campaign.
Business partner Larry Basile, a Democrat, also donated $250 to the Obama campaign.

"Welcome to the age of the internet (sic), where everyone's private life becomes public," Crutchley said in an online forum on August 10. "Yes, my contribution to John McCain's campaign for president was listed on the Huffington Post. I believe McCain will be a better commander-in-chief than Obama, who also opposes gay marriage. If we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later. Yes, I am a Massachusetts Republican, which is about the same as being an Alabama Democrat. But don't call me a 'liberal.' That's an insult."

"It's hard to imagine a less appealing donor for the McCain campaign, short of Osama bin Laden, than the co-owner of a website dedicated to helping thousands of sweaty gay men hook up for anonymous sex," said Bay Windows' Ethan Jacobs on Wednesday. "McCain has been trying to win over religious conservative voters and activists, many of whom question his dedication to fighting the culture wars, and his efforts finally seemed to be paying off. He won kudos from social conservatives for his support for a constitutional amendment in California to ban same-sex marriage, and even Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who had previously vowed never to pull the lever for McCain, has publicly softened his stance on the candidate. In his efforts to portray himself as 'pro-family,' news of McCain receiving money from Manhunt could be radioactive."

I'm not outraged. In fact, I think it was money well spent. Once word gets out, it's gonna piss off the religious "right" something fierce that McCain's getting campaign money from "perverted homosexuals" and they're going to either not go to the polls or find some idiotic third party candidate like Pat Robertson.

how long before McCain returns the donation?

I don't think contributions should be made public.

If donations are allowed, they MUST be made public. However, I'm personally against donations for political campaigns. It think that they should be government financed and financed on minimum budgets to see what they can do with them and put people on a more level playing field. One of the potential benefits from this would be we would see more politicians from other party groups. The politicians will never allow it but it would help to minimize coruption between politicians and the people donating and we would have a government that was more represtative of the people of the US, being that we would have more politicians from other parties as well.

I know that there are a variety of issues that people use to determine for whom to vote, but it shocks me that he would donate money to a campaign that would cheerfully take away his livelihood in the name of "protecting the children."

Boycott any website that supports anything that promotes homophobia and inequality. Simple.

what about websites that believe they're about equality; but in reality, aren't?

Maybe he felt that if McCain won, gays would be more apt to be afraid to be "out and about", and thus retreat to online sites to hook up.

what???you must be joking. if it were not for making donations public we would have no idea of who is contributing what to any candidate and that would be a great danger to all of us in this country.

i mean all it takes is a degree of COMMON SENSE to realize the dangers in not reporting who has made contributions to what, be it Obama or McCain or any other politician in this country. maybe you have never heard of the following word -

corruption

Noun
1. dishonesty and illegal behaviour
2. the act of corrupting morally or sexually
3. the process of rotting or decaying
4. an unintentional or unauthorized alteration in a text or data
5. an altered form of a word
