My understanding is that the techniques are still being used on special forces soldiers to enable them to avoid the psychological damage they'd experience if they were subjected to this kind of torture at the hands of the enemy. In other words, they're voluntarily submitting to the "training" for their own good, just like they submit to being waterboarded.

The training is not for the military in general; it's specifically for special forces soldiers who volunteer for the schooling. Read: Even in the special forces, not all of them have taken the course. Mainly because, well, only the special forces are likely to be tortured specifically for information, as opposed for propaganda purposes, and this training helps them deal with that.

Yes, I'm aware of this, which I indicated in my post #8 above. But I should have specified it in the opening post since that's the only thing many people will read before commenting... especially someone who's eager to label the OP as being "disingenuous." My bad. However, to my credit, I did use the word "Many" as the first word in the title of this thread to indicate that the practice doesn't extend to all soldiers.

I started to include this in post #8, but decided that it goes without saying, since most people are aware that it's common for special forces to be dropped behind enemy lines before a war even starts.

What a bunch of wussies. I was in the military and was part of a joint us/german training scenario. We "invaded" germany and were caught, the germans were "defending the homeland". It was great training for everyone and, yes degrading.
