Marriage Bill in Minnesota

According to a poll,more people oppose it then support it. To that I say who cares?! History will be the judge here.
 
I'm sorry but I view "ex-gays"who try to take our rights more loathesome then anyone else.
 
It passed out of the Senate committee!!! The House committee is expected to do the same later this evening. As a Minnesota resident who has been active in this effort for 2 years it's beyond exciting!!!

Haha, yes. Actually, as far as states are concerned, I do firmly believe that Minnesota is on the top of the progressive list and I am a little flabbergasted that this whole same sex marriage hasn't gone through sooner. Minnesota has the longest running tradition of voting democratic in elections and has been in the forefront of passing progressive laws. Generally, I am happy that I was born in Minnesota, however, things aren't always so perfect. We still struggle with a large anti-gay babyboomer generation and general ignorant conservative farming community population that almost made allowed the marriage amendment to pass in Novermber. Now that they have lost, they've been bitching and moaning about same sex marriage and I can't wait until the inevitable happens and we can shove it back in their face (no pun intended) and tell them, "Thank you for bringing this issue to a greater public; nothing helps pass a law more than discrimination and biggotry".

Sorry. I'm actually quite flattered that people even remembered that I exist and am from Minnesota!

Now, sadly, I've been so focused on graduating, projects, speeches, research, and more research, and work that I have not paid attention to anything that has happened in the world really. So really, I had absolutely no idea that this was even a current event. I wish I could chime in more! If this continues to be a topic in the future, I will most definately be commenting.
 
only bad thing is it might give a couple of the Supreme Court Justices reason to not vote down DOMA and Prop 8 when they see states like Colorado,Minnesota and Illinois passing these bills but we can't let that stop us. Full steam ahead!

I fail to see the connection. DOMA has federal relevance that's completely unrelated to state issues.

I strongly doubt that. There are still many examples of gays being "politically powerless".

I know that but you just know the anti-gays are going to point to stuff like this while ignoring the 30 other states.

I think in his mind he doesn't think the gay marriage thing will pass and this is the next best thing. It's still a joke. As for being shocked,he is a politcion after all.
 
Ninja, I know you can be a debbie downer, but let me say that I am working very closely with this campaign and know many exact numbers. The bill is much closer to passage then you think.

I don't like to be a debbie downer,just going by prior experiences sadly. I know in NY they dragged their feet as long as they could,was proud to play a part in getting it passed,even though my role wasn't as large as others.
 
No, you're pretty much a Debbie downer :p you constantly profess gloom and doom with all these movements, despite the obvious change of opinion in the country and the tidal wave of political support that's risen in the last few months. Understand - the gay rights movement is winning, and fast. We haven't had a single loss since NC, and even that was in the middle of a winning streak.
 
I don't see how the progress we've made can be seen as anything but phenomenal - I can remember a time when Marriage wasn't even considered a possibility in our lifetimes.

Now we're debating where it will happen next.
 
I fully understand the gay rights movement is winning. For the first time,gay marriage rights won at the ballot box in the fall. For the first time,gay marriage foes are the ones on the defensive and Republicans realize that running on an anti-gay platform in all but the reddest states is no longer a winning issue.
I also understand that something like a sure thing isn't so until the ink is dried on the bill. I do think there will be marriage equality in Minnesota and Illinois sooner versus later,I just don't know if this year will be that year.
