TBH, if y'alls even had the slightest clue how many Mas Extinction Events nearly happened in the past 100 years, and how narrowly most of them were averted...... and how many more possibilities are out there....... I doubt they know anything more than anyone else that keeps up on current news. You just now have more science and tech-savvy billionaires that have heard one of their idols, Stephen Hawking, warning not to keep all your eggs (us) in one basket (Earth). He's been advocating that we should colonize Mars at some point and the world governments seem to have little interest in doing so, instead pumping most their money into their militaries. So the only way to get it going now is private ventures and for something like this you need big money and people willing to spend it. And I shouldn't forget that the billionaires are doing this to make themselves richer as well.
