Not being law enforcement - I'm not in a position to say if that is unreasonable or not. But it certainly looks bad.

Hmm, I wonder if they were using animals to track him. I don't find it unreasonable that they could have missed him having to search such a wide area. They're humans. It would have been unfortunate if they had missed him, though. I'm curious to know how they decided where to end their search boundaries.

Mo ... my coohound would have found him in about ten minutes. No idea why Canine would loose the scent if they employed K-9. Perhaps they didnt want to endanger the dogs. Dogs do not understand armed people. They just seek and bring them down. So perhaps the cops didnt want the dog getting shot by the asshat.

He left behind a house that may have laundry, he left a seat full of blood in a ditched black SUV.... the clothes would work but the blood would be a solid lead in places the police would not see drops of blood the dogs nose would follow. Hmm, I suppose. I can imagine them not wanting to lose their dogs, though honestly it seems like it would have been more efficient than having their officers go door to door on their own. They only had their eyes. Dogs are much more capable obviously for this kind of task.

They could not have hunting type dogs... just drug sniffers and such. German shepards make great dogs to sniff out drugs and take down a runner but they are down right shitty at finding prey over a distance.

Oddly great sniffers like my coon hound and my lab are not very fierce and a lot of the time you have to protect the over eager seekers from being hurt by the prey.
