Another Republican bows down to the Kingmaker

McCain: Roe V. Wade Should be Overturned
by Jim Davenport, AP Writer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to improve his standing with the party's conservative voters, said Sunday the court decision that legalized abortion should be overturned.

"I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned," the Arizona senator told about 800 people in South Carolina, one of the early voting states.

McCain also vowed that if elected, he would appoint judges who "strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States and do not legislate from the bench."

The landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade gave women the right to choose an abortion to terminate a pregnancy. The Supreme Court has narrowly upheld the decision, with the presence of an increasing number of more conservative justices on the court raising the possibility that abortion rights would be limited.

Social conservatives are a critical voting bloc in the GOP presidential primaries.

McCain's campaign also announced early Sunday that he had been endorsed by former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, who had been considering his own bid for the White House, and former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, who failed in his bid for the Republican nomination in 1996.

Keating told the crowd that McCain is the "only candidate who is a true-blue, Ronald Reagan conservative."

McCain was scheduled to attend a rally promoting an abstinence program Sunday evening.

McCain has strong name recognition and the largest network of supporters in South Carolina. That backing comes in part from his staunch support for the Iraq war, something on which he focused a day earlier in Iowa. But it's the same state that dealt a crushing blow to his presidential aspirations in 2000.

McCain is trying to build support among conservatives after a recent rebuke from Christian leader James Dobson, who said he wouldn't back McCain's presidential bid.

Conservatives question McCain's opposition to a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. He opposes same-sex marriage, but says it should be regulated by the states.

Wish I could be surprised, but I noticed a while ago that he will kiss whoever's ass needed to become president.

McCain is a cantankerous old geezer; a meddlesome old coot; a miserable louse; a pencil-necked geek, a turkey-cooked dork, a silly swamp hag.

What the US needs is a one party system like Russia and China. Oh, that's right they do. It's the evangelical Xtians.

Hardly.
The single party in the U.S. is the Incumbent Party. They pass laws on a regular basis, the function of which is to get them all re-elected. It isn't foolproof, but they're getting it ever more fine-tuned. And McCain is one of the leaders and sublime architects.

The incumbent party clearly has many advantages but they are not invulnerable if they piss off enough people, as evidenced by the recent end of 12 years of Republican rule in the Congress.

But the Incumbent party is still in charge. They pretend to be "Republicans" and "Democrats", but the first item on their true platform is getting re-elected; on that they're all united. The re-election rate for incumbents is still running over 85%, but I'm sure that McCain, Feingold, Kennedy, and a few others of the leadership will find some ways to move the figure past 90% over the next few years.

I refuse to accept as legitimate any president approved by an unreformed Dobson constituency.
Such a president could never uphold his or her oath of office.

"Dobson has already come out against John McCain for his tepid view on 'supporting' same-sex unions, saying he could never vote for him. "

So how are McCain's people and the Dobson's people somehow 'buddies' ??? Again, am I missing something here?

Trying to court such a despicable guy (in most people's eyes) poison him forever in some people's eyes. Of course politics is very much about ass kicking, you just close your eyes, plug your nose, and hope the years of psych work is enough to erase the memories.

Of the Republican candidates so far, I will so have McCain over everybody else.

I think the general impression is that McCain is trying to walk a tightrope, wanting to be accepted by the Dobson realm yet not lose the rest of the GOP. It's part of a pattern, sucking up to the religious rigorists.

Have you considered Ron Paul? He has more integrity in his right ear than McCain has in his whole body. He also knows and believes in the Constitution, as opposed to knowing and believing in opportunity and power.

I have never heard of him so it really doesn't matter. If I haven't heard of him he isn't going to get the presidency. He may be a great guy, he just doesn't have a chance.

Exactly!! The McCain 'Straight Talk Express' has derailed in favor of 'Tell me what I should say to get your vote'.

Neither did Kimmy Carter -- no one had heard of him.
Neither did Ronald Reagan -- he was just a washed-up actor.
