I understand that there are risks and different standards in some hospitals abroad, but I'm considering the option of international travel for a surgery.

My procedure is estimated at $5,000 to $8,000 out of pocket.

I'm getting a quote from Bumrumgrad International in Bangkok, and looking into other overseas destinations.

Anyone with experience or thoughts?

It's going to depend on your expectations. Based upon the hospital's website, they are a boutique hospital similar to "American hospitals" that I've seen abroad where there's a more exclusive level of care and level of cost that is outside the reach of the average citizen of the country. Usually, these hospitals cater to the ultra-wealthy of their own country and foreigners.

You'll find some of the pragmatism of a socialized medicine system with the perks of an expensive hotel. Unless the hospital hires western-trained nurses and technicians, you won't see some of the high-tech features you will see in an American hospital. If your doctors were trained in the west or in one of the countries that has western-oriented medical schools, you'll get the same level of care that you would get in an American clinic or hospital.

Bumrumgrad does have something that is not seen very often in Asian hospital - a JCI accreditation. That's a good sign.

Don't do it. You'll miss your foreskin.

They don't offer the procedure I need, unfortunately. But boy, are they quick to respond! To boot, they're not significantly less than what I'd pay (with my expensive, but crappy) insurance at home.

I am shopping for a JCI accreditation. It's highlighted on medical tourism review websites.

Waiting on estimates from Malaysia, Colombia and Costa Rica. Unless they come in at half the cost, though, I'm not sure the time+travel is really going to save me big money at my price point.

You might also look at Singapore and resort communities in Mexico.

I looked into it, but passed when I read many American based doctors won't do follow up for out of country surgeries. And many want nothing to do with you even if it is an emergency.

I looked into weight loss surgery.
