Six Tyneside men have been arrested after filming themselves apparently burning copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Police said the men, all from the Gateshead area, were detained after a video appeared on the internet.

They were arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and released on bail pending further inquiries.

In a joint statement, Northumbria Police and Gateshead Council said: "The kind of behaviour displayed in this video is not representative of our community as a whole.

"Our community is one of mutual respect and we continue to work together with community leaders, residents and people of all faiths and beliefs to maintain good community relations."

Is this a better reaction than spouting "Freedom of Speech"?

Burning a book is not 'freedom of speech'. If anything, it is 'freedom of expression'.

It's absolutely correct to arrest them. They did this with the deliberate and obvious intention of causing trouble. We don't have "freedom of speech" in the UK, not to your extent at least.

Well maybe you should. Burning a book does not mean they were intentionally trying to do anything other than show their contempt for that worthless entity. They should have the freedom to do it if they wish and radical Muslims have the choice to walk away and ignore it.

For some reason I think if a group of Atheists burned copies of the Tanak or the New Testament, British authorities would do nothing.

Burning religious writings is not racism.

No you're right, burning a book is not offensive. Burning a holy book on a religiously historic day while filming it and posting the video worldwide, right after a hugely controversial debate about that very topic... well, you get the picture. It is quite obvious that they were doing something that would incite rage in a huge number of people. Can you not see the obvious differences? There's a huge difference between quietly sitting at home mumbling that I dislike your president and invading the podium during one of his speeches and screaming that I hate him.

There's also a difference between both of those and burning a religious book and putting the video on the internet... Nobody has to see it if they don't want to, whereas bursting into a public speech is causing a clear disturbance for those in attendance.

And you think they posted it purely so that people would view it and find it funny?

I wonder what would be the verdict on burning... The Book of the Law™, etc, etc?

That book's so tiny it wouldn't even make a decent fire... The Book of Thoth is somewhat meaty it would be more worth while.

I'm sure Anton LaVey's book and Crowley's books have been burnt plenty of times. But unlike, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc Satanism, Thelema, and most pagan faiths are a fringe minority even today. The backlash for such actions still wouldn't be sufficient enough to make a difference.

Why were these men arrested ? Is Britain moving toward Sharia Law ?

No, we have laws against the incitement of racial hatred. Our legal system recognises that rights come with responsibilities and doesn't shield bigotry with a fundamentalist interpretation of a written constitution.

That is such a stupid thing to say. It's like being at a funeral for a firefighter and saying "Well, he knew that he would be in danger every day. Why should be care about him if he's dead. Sure, he saved some people but his death is his own fault" or talking about a gay couple saying "They don't have to show affection in public so they should just keep it in the bedroom".

Wow can you read? That is in no way similar to someone burning a book and putting it online. It's laughable that you think it is. This is the same crap that one of the previous posters compared it to. These people weren't going to any kind of closed function where folks were gathered and insulting them.

If you don't want to see the video, then DON'T WATCH IT. You can't say the same thing about someone interrupting a funeral or a seminar or what have you, now can you?

If you don't get that, then you have my sympathy.

See, this is the problem. That's a very American way of thinking. We think in a very different way.

As a Canadian, I think our laws are similar to the U.K - well intended.

The practice of free expression can be messy, insighting, unruly, and offensive - and it's usually carried out by idiots, racists, homophobes, islamaphobes, and the like. Their intent was too offend. It's the price of being free.
