Men in Suits

MMMMKKKKAAAAAAAAAAAaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Seriously, after the 1960s looks were gone, it was not worth to be wearing suits anymore... not even with the 1980s WASPy megahunks and Armani's deconstruction.

Amusingly, I remembered this thread tonight as I sat in my chair eating chinese dumplings for supper and watched the Mormon Tabernacle Christmas special, with every Who in Whoville singing.

Their emcee began in an open collared white button-down (I think) and a blue suit that was lackluster. He also appeared in a black open collar which looked bad with his suit.

But they hedged their bet on the 2nd half and he appeared in a bowtie and tux.

Covering the board, they were, win, place, or draw.

During Lyndon Johnson's presidency some men started wearing turtle necks and chains. More recently fewer and fewer men are wearing suits or ties. Even at family weddings and funerals the majority of men aren't wearing suits nor are men going to shows downtown.

It’s all belly’s fault wearing those turtle necks all the time.

@NotHardUp1 "No apologist for President Obama, but I'm not sure he set any pace as much as reflected the wave already." I'm sure you're right, but I think his example--signifying "cool"--encouraged Captains of Industry and other businessmen to present themselves publicly without a tie, likewise Heads of State on down. Bob Iger and Emmanuel Macron immediately come to mind as examples of each. (Both sharp dressers and handsome as hell.)

It depends on the man - not his clothes.

You mean the man may make one ignore the clothes.

Happens all the time with women (girls) and children: they can get away with the stupidest clothing because all you see is a pretty (younger or older) doll and a charming angel or imp.
Funnily and conversely, that is also why marketing and advertising drudges hire young men to pose in the clothes that only old farts will afford or dare to wear.

Yes, I agree he was one in a series of leaders who lowered the bar of formality.

And I feel the same about Macron, which is still about his handsome face, including that cerebral-looking forehead. He also does a suit justice.

Sorry, but I got nuthin' for Iger.

. . . .

A young man in a suit always looks like he's borrowed it for his parole hearing.

You know it, I know it, we know it, they don't won't.

And an old fart in a suit looks like he's paving his way for a future suicide on his sentence hearing.

I finally gave in and am watching the Earthshot Prize 2022 program.

It's quite funny that Prince William is appearing in a denim-looking broadcloth shirt, open collar, cuffs rolled up. I don't think it is because he is being pitched in America. After all, it's Boston, so it's technically still Royalist.

In fairness, the Queen did don dungarees and whatnot as a mechanic during the second great war. The fight to save the planet is an even bigger battle.

I have seen the "green carpet" pics of 2022, and Kate looks absolutely, perfectly wax-like lifeless in every single one.

As for will, if you are wearing jackets that short and shiny, like a dressing gown, ties that big, cuffs that wide because of those dispensable and uncomely big wristwatch, you might as well be wearing plaid and corduroy.

Nothing better than seeing a beefy guy in a pinstripe suite made all the better if he has a beefy ass and is wearing suspenders and sock garters WOOF!

Well, I loathe denim and never wear jeans outdoors except on some very exceptional occasion when I go take out the trash to go immediately back home, and not on my way to BCN, and that hasn't prevented anyone from wearing it like there were nothing else available in the world
