Merck Foundation Severs Boy Scouts Funding Over Anti-Gay Policy

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have lost yet another corporate sponsor angered by the organization's stance on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Following in the footsteps of Intel and UPS, the Merck Foundation announced it would suspend all funding to the Boy Scouts until the ban on gay scouts and scout leaders is lifted.

The Merck Foundation's Brian Grill penned a letter outlining the decision, which reads in part:

This is sort of amusing, really. I know a guy who complains that it isn't fair that people are doing this to the Scouts, because they have the right to run their organization the way they choose. It doesn't seem to sink in that the people who have been giving to the Scouts have just as much right to stop giving because they don't like the way the Scouts are running their organization.

Choice means choice, all around.

Zach Wahls is doing an excellent job of isolating the BSA.

But it might take more than getting corporate sponsorship to drop them. This is going to be a community effort if we are to succeed in getting the gay ban tossed.

He may only succeed in splitting the organization, because the Mormon contingent, which is huge, isn't going to budge on this issue.

I find it humorous that they don't seem to have followed the Scout slogan very well -- they don't at all seem to have been prepared for this.
