After watching the videos posted in this thread and some others on YouTube, I don't think most father-son wrestling is as homoerotic as many people on here might suppose. Rather, I think it has more to do with things such as exercise, aggression, testing the limits, dominance/submission, and male bonding. I do agree with most of what you're saying but why you deny the erotic side of it all? I mean, it's often unconscious like the challenge stuff, but it can be there nonetheless. I didn't mean to rain on your parade. Unfortunately, I can't remember the title or the author. I hope someone on here might remember it. The story was about three close friends, two men and one woman, in Manhattan during the AIDS crisis. At one point, one of them, a gay man in his 30s at the time, visited his elderly parents in a retirement community in Florida. I've had an interest in wrestling starting at a very young age, both for the erotic aspects of forcing a guy to submit but also for the fun of it. I'm pretty sure I've got the right book in mind, and I'm going to try to find it in my local library. If I recall, the Florida trip was sort of a break from life in Manhattan in the middle of the AIDS crisis. My guess is that the author left the exploration of the father-son feelings alone, because Gurganus' primary thrust was to explore life and death. If I recall, the apparently strong and vigorous father died shortly after the visit, as in a month or six weeks, or something like that. But in doing so, Gurganus ignored a whole host of issues that would be of interest to gay men, such as, What does it feel like for a gay man, when his father all of a sudden shows interest in being close to him after all those years of being distant? Many gay men struggle with regret over having to have suffered over their fathers being distant and hostile toward them, while their straight male peers (they imagine) were lavished with attention from their Old Men. Perhaps wish fulfillment is what is behind the interest in father-son wrestling and other father-son scenarios that many gay men get into. Also, what was going through the son's mind when he saw his father's penis? Was he shocked, indifferent, or turned on (you'd be surprised by how many gay guys get off on elderly men, if you check around the internet)?

I wanted to delay my reply until I got a chance to have the book delivered to my local library from a distant branch, and I could re-read the parts relevant to this discussion. I'm not surprised that you were doubtful about whether I had the right book, since none of the online reviews I accessed mentioned anything about the wrestling.

As it turns out, I was off on a few details, which you might expect because I read it over 15 years ago. There was only one wrestling scene, not several, as I had thought. The scene where the son saw his father's penis happened when his father fell, and his robe opened. The book says "But his genitals are precisely my own. Mirrored, I avert my eyes." (why do we look away from what we most want to see)? Later he says "I got Dad's big prick…" At one point the son jacks off to the sight of a sandhill crane. Nothing to do with his father, but still a weird detail.

The wrestling match occurs when the son attempts to take the TV remote out of his apparently sleeping father's hand. The father surprises the son by pulling him down on top of him. The father gives the son "the Dutch rub," and forces the son down onto his body. The son admits that he doesn't half mind, because "that's the longest physical contact I've had with the guy since infancy." The Dad demands that the son ask for the remote. All the time the mother is watching, upset. The son finally concedes by saying, "You win, Daddy Daddy Dad. No contest. 'Ask!' Junior's asking." You're very kind to re-read the book and giving us a more specific description of what actually happens in the scene. Nice and interesting discovery, unfortunately it doesn't seem too detailed or erotic as it could have been, but I guess the author wasn't interested in that anyway... even if the last line about the sexual encounter is weird.
