According to this review, there are no deleted scenes from episode 1, and he dies in that one. The only older guy frontal I can think of is James Faulkner. I've seen the Blu-ray ep 1 version and it's exactly the same as the Starz broadcast one.

Main thing that drew me to check out Downton were reports of RoBates shippers. The first season or so, there was a big mystery how Robert knew Bates and, of course, the internet responded with "They're lovers!"
