Merv Griffin, the entertainment mogul, singer, talk-show host and horseman who has called La Quinta, Calif., home for 20 years, is in grave condition with cancer, according to media reports.

“Entertainment Tonight” has reported that sources tell the Hollywood show that Griffin’s prognosis is not good. Griffin’s representatives have not returned calls to The Desert Sun to confirm or deny.

Griffin, 82, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in mid-July after a recurrence of the prostate cancer he battled in 1996 was found during a routine examination.

The creator of “Jeopardy!” “Wheel of Fortune” and the host of the iconic “Merv Griffin Show” talk program has kept a 250-acre ranch in La Quinta since he visited the desert with Johnny Carson in 1986 to see Jimmy Connors play tennis.

he always came off as a classy guy. I'll say a prayer

I used to watch his show all the time. British actor, Arthur Treacher, was his sidekick.

I believe he created Jeopardy! on a plane flight with his wife. He was trying to come up with a new idea for a game show and couldn't think of one, and he didn't want to do another 'question/answer' game. His wife suggested he switch it around. When Merv didn't understand, she said, "5,760."

Merv said, "Feet in a mile."

And his wife said, "No. I gave you the answer. You tell me the question."

Merv replied, "How many feet in a mile?"

Jeopardy! was created.

If he said "how many feet in a mile?", he got the question wrong....there are 5,280 feet in a mile ;-)

He'll always be remembered as a great entertainer and a business genius for his legendary hit game shows.Always classy and will be missed.

Never say the word grave around a sick, 82-year-old man!

Forgive me. We haven't used that measurement system in years and I was going by memory. The '760' was the 'yards in a mile' thing, wasn't it?

WIFE? I thought he was gay?

From IMDB:

n March 2001, the Gold Label released his new CD, "It's Like a Dream," for which he composed the title song. Among his private passions are his family, son Tony Griffin, daughter-in-law Tricia, and grandchildren Farah and Donovan Mervyn, his long-haired sharpei dog Charlie Chan, his La Quinta ranch near Carmel, where he raises thoroughbred racing horses, and his 135 foot, four-story high ocean going yacht, Griff.

Julann Griffin (18 May 1958 - June 1976) (divorced) 1 child

Awww, I like Merv Griffin. We need more gay men like him.

Get well Merv or pass quietly.

I like ol' Merv...

A show business genius who has lived like a God for the last 40 years or so...
(That yacht of his, alone... oy...) I wish him well.

And to think that Ryan Seacrest was his last, um....well, 'protege/ house boy'....

(I've really got to find that photo)

I would rather have more gay men like Geffen. Griffin has billions of dollars in assets. He could have used some of that do to some good for the gay community. Obviously, he probably does not feel that he can because he is protecting his family. Well hopefully it does not go towards causes that cause harm to others, including the gay community.

I hope that he is not in pain.

Good entaintener... may he rest in peace

I copied and pasted the thread title from the original source. "Grave condition" is a term commonly used for people on their death bed.

And as for the Gabors, I think everyone in the US, Europe and perhaps more either dated or married one of the sisters or one of the sisters' ex husbands or boyfriends.
