Mets Get Santana!

I was SO glad to exhale last night after that extension was granted and the deal was finally completed.God it's good to be a Mets fan now!Spring training starts in two weeks!:D

He passed the physical early yesterday morning. The press conference and official introduction is going to be on Wednesday. I can't wait to see him in a Mets uniform, and pitch his first game as a Met. The crowd is gonna go nuts when he takes the mound.

Thanks, Tommy Glavin, for leaving the Mets and opening up that starting position, opening the door to getting Santana. By the way, expect an "interesting" reaction from the fans when you pitch at Shea in that Braves uniform. :p

I agree Sonny!!!

LETS GO METS!!!! ALSO, LOVE THEM GIANTS!!! WHAT A YEAR THAT AWAITS US NEW YORK FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!

(*8*);)

Our boys are hungry, and the energy of the entire team is renforced by the Santana deal.
We will make everyone forget the so-called collapse of '07 and remind people who the dominate team of the NL East really is.

If you have cable station SNY you can watch he Santana ceremony live Wednesday at 1:15
I cannot wait to see him in a Mets uniform shirt

Press release today

NEW YORK (AP) — Johan Santana arrived at Shea Stadium on Wednesday, put on his No. 57 New York Mets jersey for the first time and said he anticipated little difficulty in adjusting to pitching before some of baseball's most demanding fans.
"I think the game is the same," he said. "I'm not going to let that affect what I do on the field."
The Mets introduced Santana with a choreographed news conference, one that began with video highlights and Latin music. After an extended period for still and video cameras, and a brief statement by Santana, the Mets turned up the house lights of Shea Stadium's Diamond Club for questions.
Santana answered many with cliches, speaking how he would take things one day at a time, that success was a team effort and that he will have to make adjustments to pitching in the National League. He understands that Mets' fans demand a World Series championship — or at least an NL pennant — immediately following last year's September collapse.
"Of course, it has to be this year and beyond," he said as his wife and father looked on.
Santana walked in past a gift shop already stocked with replicas of his new jersey in home pinstripes and black, and in children's sizes.
Mets general manager Omar Minaya introduced Santana, who agreed last Friday to a $137.5 million, six-year contract that allowed his trade from the Minnesota Twins to be finalized the following day. Minaya pronounced it was the start of "a great era of Mets baseball."
"Welcome to the city of baseball," Minaya said.
Manager Willie Randolph, having acquired an ace for his staff, looked on from his front-row seat.
"You should be happy, Willie," Minaya said.

All Mets fans should be jubilantly happy indeed!Let's hope this is a great new era for the Mets and they will be going down the Canyon of Heroes in October as the Giants did yesterday!:D

That's all I could think about while watching the Giants parade. ;)

suddenly our pitching is on top again, with Santana and Pedro 1 and 2
and I just have a really good feeling that both Maine and Perez are going to be so motivated, they are gonna break out big time this year.
Pedro and Johan teaching those two kids, WHEW!
Johan is also psyched about getting a bat in his hands, and looking forward to working with HoJo. I think we are gonna see a lot of Johan running the bases and putting down some mean sac bunts..|

Well,we didn't get Johann for his bunting prowess exactly,or his ability to execute the hit and run;) but having a good hitter like Johann at the bottom of the lineup always is something to take advantage of...it can only help.

You said that right dude. I hate when during a game, bases loaded, with two outs and the pitcher comes up to bat  You pray for a hit or better yet,
(and I have seen this) a walk.
I have faith that he is going to be able to hit, or at least execute a sac bunt.
After hearing him at the conference he is up for that..|

Hey sausy, do you remember last year when the Mets played the Twins and Santana pitched a nine inning shutout? :=D:

Oh dear - I think I'll stick with cricket...

Knowing nothing about the game I normally shy away from posting in this sort of thread - but I just had to ask - what exactly is a "sac bunt".

To this poor uninitiated Aussie - it sounds remarkably like a hefty kick in the nuts...

Always glad to help someone learn and perhaps become o fan of the great game of baseball.;)

A sac bunt is when a player deliberately bunts the ball in a manner that allows a runner on base to advance to another base. The batter is almost always out (sacrificed) which is the intent of the hitter, but sometimes reaches base due to an error or fielder's choice. (when a member of the opposing team makes a bad call in throwing the ball). Sometimes the batter may safely reach base by simply outrunning the throw to first; which gives him a single, not to be confused by a sacrificial hit. Usually a batter will bunt when there are fewer than two outs and a runner on first base or runners on first and second base. Now the the runners job is to advance as soon as they see the ball bunted. A good sac bunt will put the ball up the first base line with a runner on first, or down the third base line with runners at first and second. That way you avoid a double play which with one out will end the inning. A VERY BAD THING TO DO!. Done well and the result is the runners advance to second, and third base.

I mentioned a sac bunt with regard to Santana, because he is moving from the American league (Twins) which uses a designated hitter in place of the pitcher, to the National league (Mets) where the pitcher bats for himself.
Sac bunts are most commonly attempted by pitchers, who generally are not known for their hitting abilities. Many managers believe that since their at bat will very often result in an out, they might as well try a sac bunt which if executed well will at least advance the runners.
It is not only pitchers who will put down a sac bunt, some lead off hitters also bunt frequently in similar situations, the difference is, they are often highly skilled bunters and faster runners, and usually they are trying to get on base as well as advance runners.

Sure hope that helps you understand. :D

he's a stud - i mean as a pitcher

last year - down the stretch - they did not have a go to stopper - someone to stop the stretch of bad starts - santana is that guy

i love gomez - sooo fast - i saw him make 1/2 dozen great defensive plays in left - i think he has real potential

but u gotta give to get - so no complaints

great deal

i went to 10 or so games last year - and will do so again - or more

lets go mets

I kinda felt the same way, did not really want to loose Gomez, But as good as he was in left, his hitting was not so great. I guess if I had a choice I'd prefer to keep Martinez who is a better hitter, he could also take over for Alou someday.
Gomez is one hell-of-a-base runner though, have you ever been at a Mets game when Reyes and Gomez run the bases before the game?
They are like two roadrunners, Beep Beep :D

remember the game against the yankees - clemens was on the mound

reyes and gomez were driving roger crazy on the bases

i heard martinez is can't miss - so keeping him over gomez i guess was the right play

gonna be a good year for sure

oh but i thought they gave up milledge for nothing

i think he might break out this year

Well having Reyes or Gomez on third made a lot of pitchers crazy. Reyes has a knack for distracting pitchers like no one else. The poor bastards just can't concentrate with Reyes or Gomez on third. :)

I never cared for Milledge. He pulled a couple ,of unsportsmanship antics on the field at at the plate. He did not appear to get along with most of the other players, kinda a wise ass. But, if his talent overrode all that I would have put up with him, but he was inconsistent at best. One thing is for sure, the kid has a lot of potential, once he gets his head screwed on straight.
As for his replacement, Ryan Church, I actually thought he would be gone by spring training, did not think we were going keep him. I dono a lot about him, call me crazy, but I wanted Shawn Green to finish his two year deal with the Mets.
You said "It's gonna be a good year" OH man, I feel the same way, our guys are hungry and anxious to put last year behind them. I am salivating and can not wait to hear PLAY BALL. :D

Even though the Cards are gonna blow hard this year (in all likelihood,) I'll be sure to root for the Mets if/when they make it into the playoffs.

Just for sonny and Sausy
