Michael Sam Discussion Thread [MERGED]

Re: All-American Michael Sam comes out.

Michael Sam is very brave BUT I worry he might get discriminated against in the NFL for the draft. On some straight NFL boards people are saying some NFL teams might pass him over. I hope Michael Sam gets drafted and he is on a safe team where he will feel comfortable.

Ha ha lol!

What he said. Good for him!

Re: SEC Football Star COMES OUT - HALLEJUAH!!!!

I guess he's not white and blonde enough for this forum to care. This thread was started several hours ago and it only got 13 responses as of the time I'm typing this message. Every other message board (gay and straight) is buzzing from this news. :##:

Anyway, CONGRATS to Michael Sam! I feel so happy for this moment, and for this man.

At the risk of sounding blase, but who cares?

Re: SEC Football Star COMES OUT - HALLEJUAH!!!!

It's a huge move by Michael Sam, and I'm very proud and supportive. Unlike others who have come out either in retirement, being essentially scrubs of the bench, or being in sports that don't get much traction here in the US this is a very good college player, top defensive player at his position, who has just merited by his talents a great shot at being drafted in the third or fourth round. Which means he has a shot to be an impact player, visible not only for the aspect of coming out but he is just starting out a career that has the promise of at least being a good one as a starter... if he really deserves the play in the NFL at a high level he will be picked no matter that he has come out as gay. Michael seems like someone who has the tough makeup to handle the spotlight of being the first major sport player in the US. It's a big deal.... ideally "who cares" would be a great response if we lived in a world where sexual identity did not matter, people could be whomever they were without fear of rejection, bigotry, or hatred... of being treated as if they should be ashamed of themselves and because of their sexuality they just weren't normal, they should not impose their values over "traditional" family ones. I really wish Michael the best, both professionally and personally. Hope his move bring others in the college, pro or even high school ranks to be out and proud... not better than anyone, but deserving of full equal treatment as anyone else.

Re: SEC Football Star COMES OUT - HALLEJUAH!!!!

Great news and a good sign that college football is not as homophobic anymore - lets hope in changes on the professional level.
In other news the Women's captain of England national football team, Casey Stone, also came out today. A story that wont pick up as much news but its just as big really.

Sadly I agree. I'm a bit disappointed.

N.F.L. Prospect Michael Sam Proudly Says What Teammates Knew: He’s Gay

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/10/s...on=Footer&module=MoreInSection&pgtype=article

Mr. Sam, a senior who was listed at 6 feet 2 inches and 260 pounds, had a stellar season as Missouri finished 12-2 and won the Cotton Bowl. He was a first-team all-American and was named the Associated Press defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference, widely considered the top league in college football. Teammates voted him Missouri’s most valuable player.
...and oh, by the way...he's gay. :rb:

Great news, and I wish him well!

Time for the NFL to grow up.

Re: N.F.L. Prospect Michael Sam Proudly Says What Teammates Knew: He’s Gay

I wish everyone would come out!

Re: N.F.L. Prospect Michael Sam Proudly Says What Teammates Knew: He’s Gay

Well that's the end of his NFL career in the sportsworld of institutionalized homophobia.

But I love his guts.

Re: SEC Football Star COMES OUT - HALLEJUAH!!!!

Isn't that a real shame.

It's not enough that every post in the thread was supportive, but now, we are to assume there is some racist meaning to the thread's post count. It can't be that the topic lacks controversy. It can't be that this isn't the first pro athlete to come out. It can't be that football in general is not a Hot Topic on this forum. It can't be that posters are just off doing real life activities on a Sunday night.

Definitely must be a manifestation of racism. Poor little thread.

Well, let's see now.

Pro football. Arguably THE largest sport in the United States, with inarguably THE largest televised yearly event. (Nobody ever talks about watching the World Series for the commercials.) Even on JUB, there were multiple threads leading up to, and following, the Super Bowl. The NFL has routinely been seen as one of the last bastions of sanctioned homophobia, and when discussing "which major US sport will see an openly gay athlete first?", perhaps only the NBA got fewer mentions.

And now a player has come out. Actually, not an NFL player yet, but a potential one. Which is perhaps braver (coming out before he secures a spot), but either way is definitely worthy of discussion. And discussion has been...well, modest. A few attaboys, a few "he's cute"s here and there. Why is this?

* The thread title. A casual football fan might not know what the SEC is, and may think this is a soccer player.

* He's not an NFL player yet, so there's less to gossip about. "Famous person is gay" is usually more worthy of chit-chat than "Potentially famous person is gay".

* Or perhaps Kane has a point.

I don't see any reason that they can't all be true.

"I only claim everything is race-related because everything is."

Re: All-American Michael Sam comes out.

Fair play an African American athlete and Gay, he ticks a lot of boxes but at least he will be a role model and I hate using the term a certain section of the Gay community, if not all.

Re: SEC Football Star COMES OUT - HALLEJUAH!!!!

Actually, right now, it's like watching someone jump off a cliff.

We don't know why they jumped, and we don't know how the landing is going to turn out.

Re: N.F.L. Prospect Michael Sam Proudly Says What Teammates Knew: He’s Gay

Goes to show that "straight acting" and "no one knows" is a delusion. His teammates knew. And yeah...as posted above, his career is OVER. Actually, he's pretty much aged out of the sport, anyway.

Ain't it the truth.

BTW, I commented on the other thread about this.

And the fact is...he isn't an NFL player. He's just some hopeful who probably just lost any chance of being drafted.

But I love his balls and praise him for being a role model to all the young teen boys out there playing sports.

So, how is he a 'role model', then?

Unless you mean he's teaching them to stay in the closet until they're ready to throw in the towel? ? ?

Thing is - we don't know. We're literally looking at a position we haven't ever faced before. The NFL pundits (and there's a ton of them) had this guy picked to be selected somewhere in the middle rounds of the NFL draft. And now he's out as a homosexual. So the question is - given the calendar shows 2014, will a team select him? I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that he won't be selected, but I guess we'll see.

Re: All-American Michael Sam comes out.

That's great news and all, but to be completely honest, I couldn't help but focus on how bad his teeth are in the interview. #-o

That aside, great news. Takes a lot of courage and it's been a long time coming for someone in the NFL to come out.
