Michael Sam Discussion Thread [MERGED]

Wonderful. Man comes out before (possibly) being drafted into the NFL, and instead of it being a good story, it's turned into "it's being ignored because he's BLACK".

To that I say, it's more possible that it's being ignored because he's NOT straight, and unlike Kane and his big race-leaning mouth, I can actually prove my theory with a trip to the celeb section and picking out Aaron Rodgers(and now Colin Kaepernick), who most everyone is SO CONVINCED is SO gay and is doing everything he can to acquire a beard to keep up appearances, but no one knows for sure of anything - other than him having a bullshit former gay friend - but he's the talk of the gayborhood because of pure speculation. In this case, there's nothing to speculate about, and no more gossip to go on, so no one is in any rush to say much, and certainly has nothing to say about his talent because - and this one is personal - they don't know about any of it. The same thing happened with Darren Young and Orlando Cruz, among other sports stars that came out in the last coupe years. Not that anyone was gossiping about either one of the three(although it seems a lot of the NFL coaches already knew about this guy - which is kind of irrelevant but also noted).

We'll see what happens when/if he goes to the NFL - it's great that he came out, but he can be the next(or close to) Deion Sanders or the next Tim Tebow. Time will tell.

I would imagine he weighed the consequences of coming out prior to landing a gig and has the confidence to risk it. From what I see rather he gets into the NFL or not he has the education, spirit and self esteem for a promising future and secure quality of life no matter what path it takes.

Nonetheless congratulation to him, and indeed it's a remarkable proof of courage to come out just before the draft.

Wow. Michael Sam had an amazing college career and is projected to be drafted anywhere between the 2nd and 5th rounds.

From the article, "Maybe I'm being naïve and altruistic, but my take is, if his Missouri teammates were mature enough to deal with it, why can't an NFL team deal with it in the same manner?"

He's being ignored because I'd hazard a guess that most people here don't give two shits about American football, and he's not *actually* in the NFL.

Not because he's black. But make it about race, as always...carry on.

Good observation. Also my first thought was the Green Bay Packers, the only NFL team that is publicly owned.

Generally, there are so many blacks in the NFL I don't really think anyone bothers to notice. Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks is only in his second year in the NFL. Leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win was really all that mattered.

As already stated, Michael Sam was a starter for Missouri. They won their bowl game, and were competitive in the best league of the NCAA. All of his teammates knew he was gay since last August, and I don't think it mattered.

The late Sen. Barry Goldwater (a military man), when learning of his grandson being gay, said, "all I would care about is whether or not he could shoot straight!"

Regarding Michael Sam, he's the first major football player to come out, and that is significant. The only NFL team that will draft him is a team that wants to win. The teams that reject him because he's gay are the real losers. :D

This is a great story and it is NOT being ignored. Homosexuality is the issue not race. Michael Sam came out to his team in August and his teammates have been nothing but accepting. How great is that. His coach was interviewed on Colin Cowherd's ESPN show and was fantastic in the ways he has made this easier for Sam. ESPN talked about how great this story is all day long. CNN covered it tonight.

He seems like a great person and we should all support him and appreciate his bravery. Sam even mentioned that coming out has been easy compared to the family tragedies he has endured. Watching the NFL draft this spring will certainly be interesting, that's for sure.

Did he say it was because of racism? I think Kane had a point and it's not because Michael Sam is black. If Michael Sam was a 350 lb hefty looking red head, I doubt he would get the same number of posts as a blonde player who was the prototypical jock. It's about JUB if I'm understanding him correctly.

It's just how this board is a lot of times. People want to get on their soap boxes about equality and gay rights and yadda yadda yadda and how gays don't see color and that feelings that minorities have that they aren't included are silly. But now there's a major victory NOT ONLY in gay rights worldwide but for the black gay community as well. And Kane sees nothing? Not even a thread hopping with congrats. There's a lot of multi-page threads in Hot Topic that are inane and non-important. Benderboy and Cupidboy or whatever their names are posting GIFs is far more interesting? (no offense).

So I'm not saying Kane is right or wrong but he looks more right when his claims are not only summarily dismissed without consideration but also ridiculed.

He is ridiculed because it is a baseless accusation meant to only stir up the thread. There's a multitude of reasons of why threads don't get replies. There are quite a few threads on page 1 with no more than 10 replies that have nothing to do with race at all.

I find it awesome that this man came out in the kind of position he is in right now, but because people don't reply all the time doesn't mean they don't care.

When Kane can say more than "YOU PEOPLE ONLY CARE ABOUT WHITE THINGS", then and only then will I stop calling him on his bullshit. That "opinion" thing goes both way.

Anything he can add to actually be constructive becomes lost when he's said the same thing in different ways for years on end.

No, it can. But saying that has to do with race because it doesn't have enough replies isn't a good reason to think it has anything to do with race.

I am concerned about Michael Sam safety. The NFL is VERY homophobic the Atlantic has an awesome article about the bigotry and hypocrisy of the NFL. Sports Illustrated interviewed eight sources in the NFL they say coming out will hurt Sam. Let's say Sam isn't even drafted or he might be low on the list if he is drafted. It will take a very opened minded team to take on Sam. Let' not forget the lockeroom politics remember Jonathan Martin. I WISH Sam was not all alone I fear for his safety someone might try to hurt him.
