A multitude of reasons but race in no way can be one of them?

I remember reading an article on Huffington Post by a white gay academic he said the gay community would prefer the first player to come out in a major sport to be white. But this writer was prescient in his argument the first gay player in a major sport would be African American. Michael Sam is so brave he knows how homophobic a lot of those straight black men are in the NFL. It is sad to read the articles of black men in the NFL being so homophobic. Michael Sam being a black man himself KNOWS he is in for one tough fight. It is sad it will probably be black straight men giving Sam a rough time IF he makes it to the NFL.

I just wish someone ELSE could get the courage to come out of the closet in the NFL too. It is kind of pathetic that a young college player has more guts than guys already in the NFL. If a few more men came out I think it would be easier instead of one person.

Did he say it was because of racism? I think Kane had a point and it's not because Michael Sam is black. If Michael Sam was a 350 lb hefty looking red head, I doubt he would get the same number of posts as a blonde player who was the prototypical jock. It's about JUB if I'm understanding him correctly.

It's just how this board is a lot of times. People want to get on their soap boxes about equality and gay rights and yadda yadda yadda and how gays don't see color and that feelings that minorities have that they aren't included are silly. But now there's a major victory NOT ONLY in gay rights worldwide but for the black gay community as well. And Kane sees nothing? Not even a thread hopping with congrats. There's a lot of multi-page threads in Hot Topic that are inane and non-important. Benderboy and Cupidboy or whatever their names are posting GIFs is far more interesting? (no offense).

So I'm not saying Kane is right or wrong but he looks more right when his claims are not only summarily dismissed without consideration but also ridiculed.

Kane has a point about the race issue but this board is mostly of white gay men. On black gay websites this is a hot topic. I think Michael Sam is more groundbreaking than some typical blonde white jock. The public image of the gay man in pop culture is usually a young white middle to upper class gay man. HBO new gay show looking is an example of this white gay male privilege. Michael Sam will reach more people because he shatters the myth that all gay men are white. Of course we know gay men of colour EXIST BUT in pop culture is very whitewashed. Michael Sam will spark debate in the black community about homosexuality. The Root.com a high profile black website already published an article about this story.

That is an unproven conclusion. There are multiple gay characters and celebrities who are black, including RuPaul and the cast of Noah's Ark. In that the white population is demographically more numerous, it makes sense that whites are depicted more often. To the upper class depictions, that is par for the course in entertainment and in marketing. The poor don't enjoy equal status in television shows, movies, or the news unless it is about crime. Even then, the CSI-obsessed viewers rarely want to see stories about Quickie-Mart robberies, preferring tales from the middle and upper classes. It's envy, pure and simple.

What would actually be a hot topic is whether the Latino, Chinese, Japanese, Black, White, and Native gay populations in the U.S., regardless of celebrity or profession, experience comparable rates of adult males classifying themselves as out. If the rates are different, then examining the cultural influences that create the disparity would be of both interest and use to many of us. Although i support Mr. Sam in his stance, I don't feel very influenced at all by what ANY pro athletse does, and I suspect many others feel the same, regardless of race.

I disagree, Ru Paul is seen a joke many black people think drag queens like him are the image of the gay black man. In the black community black gay men like Michael Sam confuses some straight blacks he is not effeminate yet he is gay. You have to remember the image of the homosexual is usually a young white gay man. Noah Arc was. On MTV LOGO most black straight people do not watch that network or heard of Noah's Arc. I was simply pointing out usually in the black community gay black men are IGNORED. Again, some people need to understand being a black gay man and out is seen as taboo for some straight blacks.I am not just talking about television but in terms of the people who get called on mainstream television to talk about LGBT issues or run gay and lesbian centers are usually white gay people. I do see some improvement with a few more black LGBT public figures coming out but that is very recent.

More to the point, even people on JUB did that. Saying it didn't count because diving wasn't enough of a sport.

So for all those people: Who the hell watches NFL though? And this guy isn't even in the NFL. Apparently. So I'm told. So I'm glad this guy I've never heard of has put on his "masculine pants" long enough to become a hero to someone. I didn't notice. We can all go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

And for all the other people, uhhh.. i'm happy for him. Still don't care about NFL though.

Okay you do not care about Michael Sam BUT obviously the media and many people feel differently. Most people in North America have never heard of Tom Daley. Coming out as an effeminate gay diver is not earth shattering news since diving is an effeminate sport. The NFL is a macho man sport where wimps are pulverized by their own teams.
The NFL is the biggest sport in America and Michael Sam has talent he is NO Jason Collins. Michael Sam is not a coward who waited until the end of his career to come out. I read an article on Outsports that said Michael Sam SHOULD be drafted based on his results. If gays want equality in sports it will take a masculine gay man like Michael Sam to break that barrier. Gay men like Tom Daley do not change the perceptions sports fans have of gay men he simply reinforces the negative stereotypes.

You obviously do not get out much Diving is just like men figure skating it is seen by the general public as a gay sport. Yes winning is important Michael Sam has solid results in college this guy will not be a benchwarmer like Jason Collins if he makes it to the NFL. Tom Daley is only popular with gays and straight women BUT in the grand scheme of things his coming out means nothing in North America. NFL is king over here and diving is indeed an effeminate fringe sport.

Pointing out racism is not a negative, pointing it out for no reason was the problem. There was no reason to assume that a lack of replies = racism. This thread(s) were meant to celebrate a man coming out in the position he is in, in his life. But now the thread has turned into arguments about racism where to there was no real reason even to argue about it.

I know Collins isn't a star player and that he was at the tail end of his career. But what he did still took a lot of courage and he isn't an opportunist for it..

I suppose you're right. But I can understand some of Morrissey's criticism of Jason Collins even though it may be unfair to burden Jason with such expectations. The bottomline is, I believe ALL of us want to see a masculine gay athlete who's at the top of his career represent us well. Having an athlete come out towards the end of his career will not carry the same impact as someone like Michael Sam could potentially have.
