Kane has a point about the race issue but this board is mostly of white gay men. On black gay websites this is a hot topic. I think Michael Sam is more groundbreaking than some typical blonde white jock. The public image of the gay man in pop culture is usually a young white middle to upper class gay man. HBO new gay show looking is an example of this white gay male privilege. Michael Sam will reach more people because he shatters the myth that all gay men are white. Of course we know gay men of colour EXIST BUT in pop culture is very whitewashed. Michael Sam will spark debate in the black community about homosexuality. The Root.com a high profile black website already published an article about this story.

One of the few posts I agree with of yours.


Michael Sam coming out is a huge story for all. But it is especially huge for the gay community, the black community and the gay black community.

No I haven't posted about any of the injustices in Russia because I live in the United States. However, I have been monitoring the events in Russia but it doesn't hit home for me. I also haven't posted about the Gay BLACK people in Uganda who have been jailed simply for being gay. HAVE YOU?

The point is, those are two countries which are thousands of miles away. One country is BLACK and the other is WHITE. If Black people were all that I was concerned with, how do you explain my lack of posts about the persecuted Black Gays in Africa?

I think the "reason" you seem to miss is the constant gushing that happens when a white star does the same. I don't find Kane's reaction inappropriate. Surely there would be more buzzing around these parts if he were a White guy.

Just because you don't suspect racism doesn't make it wrong (or "negative") for someone else to.

So since people dont post in specific threads/forums/sub forums (ex. Bear forum) it is ok to assume that the people who dont post there are prejudice against those types of people?

My point isnt that there cant be racism involved, just the reason is bs.

I will be honest I PERSONALLY do not CARE about Russia and this gay rights issue due to the subversive RACISM. The white western media gay and straight act like the gays in Russia have it bad. I agree the homophobia against the Russian gays is not good. However, in places like Egypt OR Iran gays can be KILLED just for being gay. In places like Uganda, Cameroon, Malaysia gays encounter MORE discrimination thann the Russians. The reason the western press make a big deal about Russia is because it is a mostly WHITE EUROPEAN NATION. The shock of the racist western media is a European county can be so homophobic. Yet the western press ignores the discrimination gays encounter in the Middle East, Africa, or Asia. Sorry I am not going to WORRY about a bunch of Europeans when other gays around the world got it WORSE!

I also want to add the SHOCK of the western media about the homophobia in Russia have UPSET some Russian gays. I read an article online for Reuters where a Russian gay man BLASTED western gays for not truly understanding the gay issue in Russia because they do NOT live there. Also, the western media SHOCK about Russian homophobia exposes their bias that all European nations are cultured and not supposed to be anti gay. Yet the press NEVER give gays in third world nations the same intense media attention because they are NOT WHITE.

I will be interested to see what happens with the draft. I think this guy may be the game changer and an important catalyst and role model for others to follow. Fingers crossed. I believe that ultimately the draft and the game are about talent and there is no denying his talent...

Anyway, CONGRATS to Michael Sam! I feel so happy for this moment, and for this man.

Look at what so many on this board considers "hot"

One will be talking about Shirley Temple for long and the NFL combine and draft are huge.
Although some posters here are saying "who cares" the NFL is one of the biggest entertainment industries in this nation.

Your comment is really ignorant just because the issue of RACE is discussed does not mean it is a trainwreck. The WHITE MALE PRIVILEGE is on display on this thread. We were simply pointing out Michael Sam was a big story because he is a young masculine gay man. Some white gay men act like ALL LGBT issues MUST revolve around white gay men which is annoying yet NOT surprising. Michael Sam will do more to reach communities of colour than some white twink like Tom Daley. I know it is a SHOCK to some white gays but for many straight blacks Michael Sam coming out is shocking. Sam is not some effeminate queen he shatters stereotypes people have of gay men.

Wonderful. Man comes out before (possibly) being drafted into the NFL, and instead of it being a good story, it's turned into "it's being ignored because he's BLACK".

To that I say, it's more possible that it's being ignored because he's NOT straight, and unlike Kane and his big race-leaning mouth, I can actually prove my theory with a trip to the celeb section and picking out Aaron Rodgers(and now Colin Kaepernick), who most everyone is SO CONVINCED is SO gay and is doing everything he can to acquire a beard to keep up appearances, but no one knows for sure of anything - other than him having a bullshit former gay friend - but he's the talk of the gayborhood because of pure speculation. In this case, there's nothing to speculate about, and no more gossip to go on, so no one is in any rush to say much, and certainly has nothing to say about his talent because - and this one is personal - they don't know about any of it. The same thing happened with Darren Young and Orlando Cruz, among other sports stars that came out in the last coupe years. Not that anyone was gossiping about either one of the three(although it seems a lot of the NFL coaches already knew about this guy - which is kind of irrelevant but also noted).

We'll see what happens when/if he goes to the NFL - it's great that he came out, but he can be the next(or close to) Deion Sanders or the next Tim Tebow. Time will tell.

Normally, I wouldn't care, but you have to admit there is a common occurrence of black LGBT erasure of existence, acknowledgement, or contribution to society on this site. All one has to do is casually notice how if someone black on this site does bring up the lack of "x" involving acknowledgement of certain things amongst black LGBTs then there is somebody saying it's racism. When it is then there is some connotation of tokenism or sexual fetish tied to said individual(s) versus normalcy.
