Michele Bachmann kicks off campaign with idiotic gaffe!

Now, a question I've been pondering; why exactly would Bachmann try to illicit connection to and with John Wayne the actor??? I mean the guy was a draft-dodging, womanizing, alcoholic, who's wife would beat the shit out of him when he was falling down drunk.

Seriously? Or does she just admire that although John Wayne was an utter fraud he was a "tough guy" on screen just like she is.... all bark, no bite.

The John Wayne film image captures the imagination of very many people who need a hero who best illustrates the person they wish they could be or even imitate.

He drank too much, and smoked far too much. So did most men of his generation. Many Hollywood celebrities have a well publicised reputation for womanising. Wayne's behaviour was probably the rule rather than the exception. I rather suspect that many of John Wayne's fans are well aware of his many human weaknesses.

Wayne was used extensively in war time propaganda films; and thus served his country in a manner that made the best use of his talents. I appreciate that other actors, such as James Stewart went off to war, and fought the good fight.

Once we delve into the private life of a dead hero we soon learn that they also possessed human frailties that reveal the flawed human being. Their go, I. In times of crisis their heroic, even fictional status can been used as that which best serves the needs of a politician in need of creating an image that will bolster their campaign to be recognised as an emerging hero able to take command of the ship of state.

You answered that question by your very own illustrations in your post just above that one. ..|

1950's America - (minus) the 90% taxation on the richest 1%, and making those who don't agree with her message the legalized "second class" citizens that many of us already are, especially if you're a teacher, a member of a union, support public funding of the arts, universal health care, the middle-class, or Gay.

She's appealing to a time that many *cough* "conservatives" hold dear.

An America that they helped to destroy, while eschewing Capitalism, and Free Markets, which they also helped to destroy by allowing monopolies, the elimination of government regulations, while busting up unions, and the rights of the American worker to barter for a piece of the profits, and to remain just as competitive in the "free market" as their employers.

My Grandpa use to say, "If you don't stand for something, then you'll fall for anything."

Michele Bachmann attempted to compare herself to John Wayne. An Iconic Hollywood Actor who came to represent all that was good and strong about the American Character.

But like all Hollywood Actors, and the "right-wings" ability to wave the American Flag and to invoke another Hollywood Actor's Name; Ronald Reagan, they're just side stepping what all of our elected representatives should be standing for; The United States Constitution.

A document where the preamble states within the FIRST THREE WORDS:

We The People

Not the corporate interests, or capitalism, or the slogans on the side of a bus, but WE THE PEOPLE!

And not some fairy tale version of it, or some rewritten history of it, but all of us.

But she wants to compare herself to either a dead Hollywood Actor, or a Serial Killer dressed as a clown (depending upon who you talk to), just goes to show how fucked up this country truly is, and what's happened to our Republic, and the fact that she's even being given any credence.

Too bad there wasn't this much press when Obama said he hadn't been to all the 57 states.

If the press had done their job -- we would have had another person in the office.

Wonder if Obama still thinks it is the Marine Corpse and not the Marine Corps.

I found an article at Alternet that mentions 32 of these "mistakes" she makes. But since the article started at Mother Jones I will post it.

Has Alternet posted all the "mistakes" made by Obama? I know the answer to that without getting your response.

I'm not a Bachmann fan but you gotta be a little fair.

The issue is one of identifying a candidate - Michele Bachmann - whose track record is one that reaches to the deepest pit of mediocrity.

I wish the Republican Party would offer the American nation a candidate whom the world could respect as a serious contender for the White House.

I am still waiting.

Cue the fake outrage by the right wing JUBBERS.

If there are any JUBBERS who actually aupport this crazy woman, why won't they go to her husband's conversion clinic and become straight?

I thought, it couldn't get any better...

Bachmann's former chief of staff says she's not qualiifed.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/ar...ency-but-Pawlenty-has-the-judgment-and-skills

As the former chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party during the tenure of Gov. Tim Pawlenty, as well as the former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, I have watched both candidates from behind the public scene. I've seen how they handle the pressures of the job; I've seen how they lead a staff; and I've seen how they would govern if elected to the most powerful office in the world.

Having seen the two of them, up close and over a long period of time, it is clear to me that while Tim Pawlenty possesses the judgment, the demeanor, and the readiness to serve as president, Michele Bachmann decidedly does not.

Big surprise.

Springer, why don't you just create an anti-Obama thread like you usually do?

This thread is about Bachmann. You always try to change he subject. [-X

I also remember the outrage about the 'mistake' on the Oval Office carpet attribution being plastered in the media for about a month............

Chelle deserves her licks on this one.

The good thing though is that she managed to overshadow Palin's nonsense trip and the ID with John Wayne.....nicely done there girls.

My mom's friend? I doubt she slept through the Latin Mass -- she seems to have it memorized.

She apparently has a priest who verges on idolatry in America-worship, who laments there aren't any "true Catholics" running for office, but points toward about anything that hates gays and liberals.

Going off-topic here, but real Catholics are considered one of the most Liberal sects of Christianity (that would put them more in the center compared to say Evangelicals). Starting with Rerum Novarum (IMO the most important one because it actually ENCOURAGES unions and collective bargaining...for private enterprise) all the way to Caritas in Veritae, you can see many of the Church's social statements. Your mom's friend's pastor is just a wolf in lamb's wool.

I will say I could probably sit through a Spanish mass and understand most of it. I sadly still know "Padre Nuestro" y "Dios Te Salve Maria" from high school.

So much in your post(s) that I agree with, as usual!

Sadly, and dangerously, you do recall that the Supreme Court, for well more than a century now, has also considered corporations to be "People." I don't believe they've used this plural form re: corporations, but they have used the singular, and the plural naturally follows.

That "57 states" gaffe was all over the media.

I've never bothered to count, but could it be that the United States has 57 States and Possessions (territories)? whether that's what he meant to say, that's not what he SAID, though.

tintinnabulation*
Why would that be odd?

If you are familiar with the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe*, you wouldn't give it a second thought. Don't get me started here, but it has become a badge of honor to NOT know something/anything in our society.

Until fairly recently, there was a body of knowledge - a common cultural thread that united us as a society. There are some elitist universities which still have a College of Arts and Letters cultivating the beginnings of a well-rounded education. Higher education now has morphed into a somewhat sophisticated trade school - whose only function is to make more money.

Now, we're too busy worrying about Anthony Weiner's junk, the Casey Anthony trial or the latest contestants on American Idol. This country is turning into an intellectual cesspool and I suspect that the willing participants couldn't be more pleased. *|*

*The Bells - if anyone is interested.

She attacks our community constantly.

Why should we not return the volleys?

I'd appreciate a kibosh on the name-calling, chance.

What IS your position, anyway? Beyond apologizing for our enemies, that is.

My position? On Michelle Bachman?

I think she's smart - much smarter than Palin
That she could go from flavor of the month/primary - in her "home" state of Iowa - to a longer term hanger on in the process - perhaps a VP slot

That her position on social issues is abominable

I'm prob closer to her on economic issues than Pres. Obama

I think wealthy people are not the enemy and that in terms of tax "increases", closing loopholes is a no brainer and perhaps a modest increase on % for big big mofo earners is in order

I think people - in the media - here on JUB - who attack her viciously - create a monster

It was done with Palin

It's being done now

I've already seen stuff on the demonization of Bachman

Which allows her to skate on the issues

So stop it already

Doing it is stupid - it is moronic - that's my point

Hope that helps

Some here thought it was.

"Some" reporting for duty ;)

The word itself is fine

The way a certain full of himself clubber uses it is ........... meh

I prefer kibosh personally

It's all about the "sympathy" vote.

If Michele Bachmann is viewed as being attacked for her religious views, or her apparent moronic/retarded view of articulating something that her supporters understand, while her detractors want to take her down for it, just gives her that much more support.

I'd rather be having a discussion here, and with my friends and neighbors about what she's really saying, and why the woman is dangerous than making fun of her. Rather than worrying about how one poster on an internet forum appears to be waffling.

Seriously. ..|

don't care for homework ........ as stated earlier

and waffles? nah - like pancakes better

me no waffle

as for your post here, at the risk of "waffling" ;) I agree

you've had some strange moments here - much fewer than me - but indeed very strange moments

this is not one of them

do not underestimate the power of a woman under attack
