Michelle Obama was right

Let me ask, where did I say you were against free speech?? I said you two were sounding like the protesters.

What does the US have to be proud of? A 'revolution'(in other words, a rebellion), which revolved around money, uneven political and religious grounds for those not of the majorities, a REALLY fucked up health care system(It will take probably 2-3 REALLY focused presidents, in a row, to get it back on track), the birthing of the KKK, the American Civil War which you butchered yourselves, the swearing in, not once, but twice, of the worst democratic leader the world has ever seen, the starting of two wars that will never end; the War on "Drugs" and the War on "Terror", that enough to be proud of?

EDIT: Reading over your post, about the "liberties" you have, I remembered the Patriot Act, which your government passed(apparently without even reading it) which restricts both your, and everyone else's, liberties.(Say Hi to the NSA and Homeland Security everyone)

so r u trying to be anti american ? just asking

Sometimes a little distance allows one to see more clearly than a man among the trees can see. You ought to get out more often in the clean air to see for yourself.

In today's political climate, pointing out the flaws in thew Facade of America is not popular, but those that do, may just have a higher hill to stand on when looking at the country.

Yes. Mostly because the US thinks of itself as the global police force, we even have members on here who think of it as such. And if you don't agree, then tell me why it is that when the US Army is in war, it is often described as "defending the free world" or "fighting for democracy"

Just curious Glafna, ..... but, who was the worst democratic leader..sworn in twice, that the world has ever seen?.... I can think of the worst neocon leader the world has ever seen...GWB.

I really think the remark was taken out of context. O'Reily took one sound bite and started a smear campaign. I expect more of these dirty tactics from Bill O'Reily and the GOP. It's only heating up now because by November the Republicans be in full flight with the attacks. Michelle Obama was referring to the voter turnout and support her husband received. Those remarks had nothing to do with her patriotism.

hard to imagine at her age that this is the first time she was proud (as an adult)

at a minimum, stupid thing to say - given her status as dem front runner's wife

at a maximum, she hasn't been too happy living in the u.s. for quite some time

oh no way man i totally agree with that statement. i went to so many anti war rallies and i actually spoke at them. i used that so much for a opening line i 10000000000000000000000000000000% agree with you. but theres really no reason to be anti american. there is so many things in america and to just express so much dislike towards a country because of one factor just seems kinda wrong. you know ? i guess i mostly take offense to it cuz im happy with my country im not proud of it and i just think of the good things from america. the corrupt goverment and so on just shows u the bad things that come from here. i guess its kinda like how, i hate the war but, i support the troops it just seems like the right thing to do.

It is difficult to be pround of anything when it is all filtered through a dark, suubjective prism which allows only flaws to shine through.

It amazes me how so many come to the defense of Mrs. Obama by changing what she said. She did not say she found "little" to be proud of. She found NOTHING (until he husband began leading the Demoratic nominee parade.)She knew exactly what she was saying; indeed said it twice. If you have to change the facts to make your case, you have no case.

To truthfully report what one has siad is not a dirty trick. And has Mrs. Obama clearly explained away her words? No. So, I believe until she convincingly does so, one should be free to interpret them in a not unreasonable way. In her life time there have been tremendous advances for blacks and women. He husband was previsouly elected to the Senate. She is well educated and unless she was briainwashed surely knows that in four short years, at great cost in lives and treasure, the US was instrumental in ridding the world of Nazis, Italian Fascists, and an Imperialist expansionist Japan. The country achieved the most affluence for the greatest number of peole anywhere. We have also stumbled in some respects, but that can hardly be said to eradiate every good.

Neither major party these days really wants a melting pot. What they want are special interests -- "evangelicals", blacks, Hispanics, whatever -- following out of loyalty, not out of belief in principles.

you're right. I don't want to be a part of a "melting pot." That idea entails my own cultural dissolution into a solution that does not represent me in the least. In fact I would doubt that minorities are ever truly dissolved into the melting pot. Our brown, black, red, and yellow never melts and mingles with the white in the pot, we are simply dipped and coated with a thin layer of white that does little to hide our "otherness." The way I see it, the US shouldn't be about cultural homogenization, it should be about cultural hybridization. What makes the US so different is that it is made up of immigrants. Sadly, most people forget where they come from.

LaloGS, couldn’t agree with you more, well said.

I could ramble on about numerous items that I am not proud that this country or its citizens have ignored or not addressed and I could write pages. But, the issue is not me, it is Michelle Obama, her experience and what leads her to voice her opinion and make a remark like that.

I am happy that I have not experienced what Michelle Obama has experienced. We all know that to be a black person and a woman makes it harder for you to get on in life. Why should she be proud of growing up in a life like that having to fight and claw her way to what she has achieved when a white guy or even a white woman does not have to put up with the silent and blatant discrimination that she has experienced. Why should she be proud of that or the country that has allowed that.

Being a Gay person, everyone on this sight knows what discrimination is. Are you proud of the people who have discriminated against you and the country that has allowed it? I see and hope you see Gay discrimination slowly subsiding as well as black discrimination but, it has not been eradicated. While other nations allow Gay people in the military, marriage and equality in governmental benefits the US does not. Why should we be proud of that?

I assume that from her point of view, her feelings are not that far away from what I have described. Why should she be proud of a country where it is possible for the Clinton campaign to make an issue of her husbands color in the Carolina primary race and try and use that as a divisive issue. Why should we be proud of a country that will make an issue out of this statement when the election happens? You know and I know that this will be an issue when the republicans start their full court press for the white house. Why should she be proud of that? Why can’t she express her opinion and be respected for that?

Are there issues that we should be proud of? Yes, absolutely but, there are issues that we should not be proud of and I am certainly am not
.

I'm in agreement and in understanding of the whole of this post, but want to comment exclusively to the portion that I've highlighted.

:)

Why can't Michelle Obama, and/or LaloGS share their comments with the rest of us?

In my opinion, the media, the PC Police, and those looking to score quick political points were all over her comments like stink on shit.

Without once taking into context what she was actually saying. [-X

There was almost a knee-jerk reaction from some of the regulars here, but I'm happy to see that they reeled it in a bit. ;)

As I understood Michele Obama's comments, she was proud of the fact that race didn't seem to be an issue with many Americans.

For Michelle Obama this gives her something to be proud of, for a Southern Gay Redneck I'm more surprised in my fellow Americans, than I am proud, but I say ROCK ON! ..|

In my lifetime, the last time that I was proud to be an American were the minutes, hours, and days that followed the events of September 11, 2001.

For those brief moments we were ALL AMERICANS, all of us. We smiled at strangers, waved at people to cut in front of us in traffic, and openly wept for people that we had never met, and never knew.

The majority of the free world stood with us during that dark time, and not only was I proud to be an American, I was proud to be a citizen of the World.

Then Bush, the Neo-Cons, and the Neo-Nazi-Bible-Thumping-Fascists pissed it all away for personal, political, and corporate gain, to the point where many say that we haven't been this divided as Americans since the Civil War of the 19th Century.

So Michele, and LaloGS are entitled to feel anyway that they want.

IMHO. ..|

Thank you Centex.

Being aware of our faults is not the same as being anti-American. If we don't understand the problem then there is no solution.

America of late has become a puss filled boil infected with hatred for our own values. We need to lance the boil and drain the hatred away. The only way I can see this being achieved is if we don't permit the Repuglicans who have brought this state of hatred about are deposed. Even safer, would be to prosecute them for their crimes against the country and the world.

Repuglicans don't love America and what it stands for, but they are always the first to pin on the flag, and scream traitor at anyone who points out their failures.

In their confusion, Repuglicans believe a police state will protect us, but all that will do is increase the internal mistrust of each other, and make it easier to control us.

What they wish for is a population so homogenized as to be virtually without individuality or uniqueness. Once we are all Stepford Wife docile, then they would be happy. I for one believe they should go fuck themselves with an extra long splintered broom handle 'till it hurts.
