Mickey Rourke is in negotiations to play the villain in the Iron Man sequel.

The Angel Heart star and Sam Rockwell are both up for bad guy roles in Jon Favreau's follow-up to his 2008 hit, which will begin shooting this spring.

Rourke is the favourite to land the role of Russian arms dealer the Crimson Dynamo, according to Daily Variety.

The action film, starring Robert Downey Jr., is scheduled to hit cinemas in summer 2010.

Re: Mickey Rourke to play the villain in Iron Man

Marvel has been keeping a very tight lid on the script for the sequel, being written by Justin Theroux, but it is known that Mickey Rourke would play The Crimson Dynamo. Insiders have said that the villain would be Iron Man's Russian counter-part.

Sam Rockwell will play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard, making for one eclectically cast summer blockbuster.
Another part -one for Stark's assistant Natasha - is still open.

The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach.

Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010.

Wondering when Mandarin will show up? Isn't he Iron Man's biggest enemy (I'm pretty much just an X-Man buff)?

Guess I'm so used to seeing the arch-enemy in the 1st films (Magneto, Green Goblin, Lex Luthor in Returns, etc). Although they waited for Joker until the sequel to BB and that turned the well.

Maybe it'll be a trend to put off the most famous enemies to get a good build-up in sequels?

I haven't seen Iron Man 1 yet. Does anyone know if it is coming out on cable or DVD anytime soon?

Re: Mickey Rourke to play the villain in Iron Man

Iron Man has been out on DVD for a while, i don't know about cable.

i think Rourke is great and will be an awesome villain, i'm pretty excited to hear he'll be in it.

And if you watched passed the ending credits, you would have seen a teaser with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, so I'm sure he's got a major part in the sequel.

i was under the impressing that the Nick Fury bit at the end was a set up for The Avengers movie.

Re: Mickey Rourke to play the villain in Iron Man

You're probably right. I don't follow Marvel comics that closely. But after googling, I see that the Avengers is being made for 2011.

I've also heard the Mickey Rourke could be playing Whiplash.

Mickey's going to win the Best Actor Oscar for "The Wrestler." I bet his agent is negotiating for big $$$$ for Iron Man 2.

He really deserves to win the Oscar this year, but Sean Penn portrayal of Harvey Milk is becoming a favourite performance among the Academy voters.
