Ever since Windows 8, I've been so fed up with Microsoft trying to change more and more. 9 came briefly, now 10, so annoying to me. I actually had faith that Windows would get better when I heard rumors that the start menu was coming back, hated the metro screen. I played a little with the demo at the store, you know those laptops on display that you can fiddle with but can't buy. Hated it, just not me-friendly.

Since the beginning, whatever changes took place, Windows stayed consistently the same, it was still the Windows I knew and was happy to use, then 7 came along and that was the beginning of the end.

I'm using Windows 8 now, using the Classic Start Menu Shell, format Windows 7.
Microsoft, however, is still harrassing me with that GMX file offering the Windows 10 update

Anybody else in a similar predicament?

Microsoft keeps trying to emulate Apple and have the "hip" OS for phones and tablets - but they keep forgetting that the VAST majority of their market is - and will be for a long time - business desktops.

Many businesses still use XP and Microsoft should provide them an OS that is functional for business without all the toys.

Do check your system - it you are on Windows 8 and not 8.1 they have ended support for Windows 8 and so you should update to 8.1 which you can also use classic shell with.

I downgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7, it was just so horrible that I couldn't trust Microsoft any more. Now they have Windows Updates which annoy the fuck out of you to install Windows 10.

I have windows 7 and my update for 10 just sits there. You can turn off the notifications.
But all versions of windows have the backdoor built in to them. Not sure how secure Windows 10 is compared to the rest but they got some bad press for automatically enabling the "Parental" spying feature.

The problem that you guys are complaining about is Microsoft's attempt to create an interface that works the same on a desktop computer as it does on a tablet. Microsoft is trying to leverage its monopoly on the desktop to tablets and phones. MS has not been at all successful in the mobile computer marketplace, accounting for less than 5% of sales there. But mobile seems to be the future of computing, so this is a big problem for Microsoft. If they can force a tablet OS on your desktop, they believe you will be more likely to buy one of their phones or tablets, since you already know the interface.

But mouse and keyboard are fundamentally different from touchscreens. The mouse interface is very precise - you can fix the cursor on an area only a few pixels wide. Tablet and phone screens are crude by comparison, and are constantly moving about. They work best when the interface offers you a big button that your fat finger can find. The two approaches don't seem to mix well, and the massive inventory of Windows application programs is optimized for the desktop mouse and keyboard. It's hard to imagine editing a picture using Photoshop on a tablet, for example. Microsoft's strength has always been its massive inventory of legacy programs. But that legacy does not translate well to the mobile environment, and attempting to force it has been awkward.

You will note that Apple has, perhaps wisely, kept its two interfaces - desktop and mobile - separate. But Microsoft seems determined to cram a tablet interface down your desktop throats. Because the company is very, very concerned about its future in the mobile computing environment.

I just got a Surface Book, which is actually Microsoft's very first laptop (Think about it... Yup. First. I know, right? Crazy. But yeah, this is technically the first laptop that Microsoft made themselves). First of all, you can talk about how Microsoft is totally trying to emulate Apple's cool, sleek, millennial style... which is totally true. I mean, the Surface Book flatout looks like a MacBook and the Microsoft Stores look exactly like genius bars, but with color. But really, I don't mind it. I mean, Microsoft had to change its look too, otherwise it would seem incredibly outdated. The only thing I do mind is that they're also copying Apple's little habit of overpricing their products.

As for Windows 10... I have that update notification constantly bugging me on my old computer and I refuse to act on it. However, on my new Surface Book, 10 was obviously already pre-installed. I was really annoyed at first and thoroughly confused by all the tablet-friendly layouts, but after awhile I got used to it. It's really, really, really not as bad as it seems. At it's core, it's still the same old OS, just with a face-lift. One thing that's beautiful about modern computing is that literally everything is customizable, so if you tweak with some settings you can turn off all the tablet-y things and make it run pretty much exactly like 7.

My current desktop is an HP "Envy 20" Touchscreen. I don't use the "Touch" all that much. It was cheaper than a comparable Mac, by a Lot! It came with Windows 8, that later updated to 8.1. When I first got it, it took me about 3 days to figure out how to turn it off, other than hitting the power button!

Two months ago, my older HP printer wanted to update it's driver. However, it wouldn't do that until Windows updated, and Windows was refusing to update! Spent several hours following the "chase your tail" instructions, troubleshooters, etc., etc. Somewhere in that process the printer's current driver became "corrupted"!

Almost (but not quite) a year ago, I'd had update problems, called Microsoft, signed up for their "Assure" program (for a year). Their techs took remote control of my machine. After malware scans, etc., etc., and HOURS on the phone, during different sessions, because it was taking so long, with several someones in The Philippines, it finally got straightened out.

THIS time, ended up calling them again, and went through the whole scenario Again! Bottom line ... finally went for a "Refresh", which didn't work!!!!

Took it to the Microslop store here, which is just a mall kiosk, and couldn't handle a desktop. Closest "Big" store is 90min. away. 3hr. round trip to drop it off. Same trip the next weekend to pick it up. I'd agreed to them updating it to Widows 10 (that's not a typo).

In the mean time I was running an "Ancient" Mac Mini, that had no problems "talking" to my printer. I was able to do my taxes just before the deadline.

Happy to have the HP back, and kinda liking Widows 10, believe it or not. It easier to find apps (once I had them reinstalled), and things like Control Panel, Task Manager, and shutting down. It's also "talking" with my printer, too.

I work with Macs and PCs at work. Microslop seems to be a much "dirtier" O.S. It clutters itself up keeping files it doesn't need, and often ends up defeating itself through all the clutter. When their own techs can't get it to comply, how much more frustrating it is for us poor end users?!

When it's working I like it, once I've learned my way around it. It does have some features that the Macs don't. Still ... the Macs are simpler and more stable.

If I could afford a new Mac for the house, I'd get one! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ugh! Don't get me started with Windows 10. I signed up for 10 and then wanted to put off updating. That worked for about a month. Then it forced me to upgrade. Did it use my Windows Live account? Uh, NO. It used my Hotmail account. Which I didn't have the password written down for. No getting past the login screen.

Thankfully I'd installed Reflect and had a full 8.1 backup. I rebooted and downgraded. It then took a whole lot of searching for answers to find out how to get rid of all the shit that Widows downloaded. I found the folder. Could not delete. I took ownership. Still couldn't delete. I had to go into the folder and take ownership of each file and folder. I also had to change permissions on all of them. Even though my account is an Administrator (just like it was on XP). That took damn near 3 days. ](*,)

Now I have Update to notify, not download. And I hid all relevant 10 updates.

Waiting for a friend to dig out her computer (it's buried in her garage) and see just what it is. If I get it, I'm installing Linux on it. Once I get used to Linux, I'm going to rip Windows out of this box and go with Linux. Take that Microsux.

HATE Windows 10.

  • Installed sneakily.
  • Advertisements for Windows Office Upgrade all the fucking time.
  • Constant freezes, including Blue Screen of Death.
  • Windows Firewall shuts off intermittently.

The freezing is probably the worst. I've looked for fixes, but the problem appears to be frequent amongst users with no reliable solution. I don't use sleep mode at all anymore.

I have Windows 10 on my new desktop -

I don't hate it - but I really wish I could "upgrade" to Windows 7.

For me the worst part is the excessive Internet integration. Simple tasks like searching for files are much slower in 10. It wants to go to the web (mainly Bing) for everything - I am just looking for a Word file on my computer - I don't need to do a search of the whole Internet!

Maybe find some answers. http://www.tenforums.com/

I bought my first Macbook Pro because after running Win 10 for a few months, I went back to 8.1 but Microsoft will end support for that soon enough. I'll never buy another Windows PC again.

Want to hear something funny about MS's attempt at the tiles for your phones? It's the same OS for servers. Ever log into a Windows 2012 server? It is Windows 8. What good are those tiles on a remote desktop session anyways? Who needs them on a web server or a SQL Server??

Just sayin...

I recently upgraded both my laptop and desktop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. My laptop is fine but had a lot of trouble upgrading my desktop - the update kept failing and reverting back to W7. Sometimes the W10 updates still fail on that machine on the first attempt. And that is the most annoying thing for me about W10 - you have much less control over Windows updates, they can just start to install without prompt.

Windows 10 is a big improvement on Windows 8 though. I had to use W8 at work briefly and it was the worst Windows OS I've ever used.
