Well, not legally. But a blessed soul got me a new laptop -- and it came already cursed with Windows 8. After hours of not-quite pulling my hair out, but taking antacids and a chill-pill, I finally managed to get Firefox installed, and went out and got me a nice item that turns the Windows 8 interface back pretty much into the Windows 7 one.

In a just world, Microsoft would pay me $30/hr for trying for three hours to figure out their idiocy, plus $300 for pain and suffering.

$3000 for punitive damages wouldn't hurt, either.

I feel your hatred of Windows 8. What is the item that turns the interface back to 7?

Microsoft doesn't care whether you like it or not.

They have a monopoly.

You will pay them whatever they demand, and you will learn to use whatever they offer.

couldn't agree more!! got my new laptop and had no idea what W8 was. I still don't know how to do half the stuff I could do on my old one with W7. I don't like it at all. sux big time!!!!!!!!

Except that every time they pull this shit, more people shift to other systems. I would have, except a generous soul here bestowed a new laptop on me before I could squirrel away enough bucks to make the transition.

I always have a love/hate relationship with windows. But given Mac has REALLLY limited software selection and an complete alien interface for me. Was Windows that bad though? My sister quite like it. Was it as bad as Vista?

I like Win8 and find it easy to use. Sure, it took some getting used to, but everything is there if you take the time to find it.

No, they don't.

Windows still has 92.2% of the world-wide market. There are no "other systems" for people to switch to. Apple does not try to compete with Microsoft, except at the very high end of the marketplace. For 92% of us, it's Windows or it's nothing.

Just go out and try to buy a computer without Windows on it. It's a rather difficult thing to do.

Yeah, Microsoft itself says it will take people six weeks to learn to use Win8 -- that's really easy.... NOT!!!

I can't even figure out how to play solitaire without the damned system turning on my wireless and putting me online!

I did finally figure out how to re-establish my computer's security by unhooking my user account from Microsoft -- though knowing their ethical level, they can probably just walk in some back door any time they feel like, anyway.

Sounds like time to apply the anti-trust laws -- take about five billion from Microsoft and give it out as grants to people to provide competition.

I am so tired of new systems, being in or out of Beta (whatever that is), being rendered obsolescent, of downloading updates which always come in from MS late at night when you want to shut the laptop down, of configuring updates, and of having things made so simple they are impressively complex.

Why don't they fix Oops! Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage if they want to fix something.

The only person it will take 6 weeks to learn Win 8 is somebody who has never owned or used a computer.

As for solitaire, I imagine you are playing the Microsoft Solitaire Collection or one of the other Solitaire games from the Windows Store. If that's the case, the game is probably requiring a connection in order to play. I use MS Solitaire Collection and it requires a connection to play. If you don't like that, then download and install a normal, everyday version of Solitaire that you like that you can play in Desktop mode. Problem solved.

I don't know why you would want to "unhook" your Win 8 system from your Microsoft account. Since I've been using Win 8 this is one of the things I like the most. I have 3 computers with Win 8 (Laptop, Desktop, and Surface Pro). When I make changes on one and then log into one of the others, the settings carry over automatically (desktop wallpaper, taskbar settings, file / folder options, etc.). I really love this feature. But if you want it "unhooked" then to each his own. However, I think you're missing out ;-)

Most people I've seen complain about Win 8 have not given it a fair shake.

One more thing, installing software that changes the look and feel of the OS is asking for trouble in my opinion. Trying to turn Win 8 into Win 7 has the potential to cause any number of issues and system instability (registry errors, system performance issues, and any number of other problems can surface...no pun intended). Anywho, just my 2 cents. The more I use Win 8, the more I like it. Almost all of the programs I run are in Desktop mode, the good old-fashioned stuff I'm used to on Win 7, so the only thing I see myself going to the Start screen for are my Solitaire, and Taptiles games and once Windows blue comes out, I will be able to start up in Desktop mode, so I won't even have to look at the Start screen if I don't want to.

Peace out......:D

Windows 8 is more for tablets than it is for PC and laptop, I have no idea why they created such a stupid start up screen, unless it was a touch screen then it would be much functional to use. Gaming on it is close to impossible, I wish Windows 7 would of stayed longer it was the best operating system since XP.

Hopefully they will release an update which gives you the option of adding the start button but to be honest I just placed all the important stuff that I need on the tool bar.

The greatest problem Win8 has is that it's trying to be all things to all people. Tacking all these touch-oriented features onto their OS would be a great idea if the majority of their users had touch-controlled devices. But, of course, about 91% of that 92.2% aren't using a touch controlled device. The result is a bunch of very underwhelmed, and often frustrated, customers.

I hate to say it, but I think Apple really understand the market in this way. Their touch-controled OS works great on touch devices. Their desktop OS works great on desktop devices. Apple are gradually moving the practical elements of touch into their desktop OS, but not trying to make one OS that serves all devices.

I don't like people I don't know personally and have come to trust knowing my computer's password -- and given Microsoft's record, I am predisposed to not trust anything they say or do, or believe they are competent to have the keys to my little kingdom.

Oh -- and why I should want more than one computer is beyond me -- having just one is sufficiently expensive!

Apple learned the lesson long ago they market share does not confer divine status. Microsoft is like a four-ton monster who thinks that if it farts, everyone will like it, and if it steps in the pizza, everyone will applaud. So they proceed as though they can just yank everyone into some radical change and it will make them wildly popular.

My old XP tower died (for the second time) about 2mo. back. I replaced it with an HP "Envy 20" all-in-one. The computer is in the monitor.

I was TOTALLY surprised when I first encountered Win 8! I knew it was "Touch Smart", but since I keep the monitor at arms length, that's not exactly comfy! It also took me a bit to find the Desktop style display, and about 3 days to find out how to shut it down, rather than just pushing the on/off switch! ](*,)

However, after "playing", Cursing, and exploring, downloading old software (which it surprisingly "took"), and venturing into areas I still don't understand what they do, how they do it, or even what they're for, my "New Best Buddy" and I have finally come to working terms. \:/

I've still got a lot to learn, if I so wish, but I'm now as comfortable as I was with my previous system. And, this one is a Lot more powerful! (!) (!w!)

All the more reasons to ... no matter what ...

Keep smilin'!! (*8*)
