Microsoft Silverlight

I trust very little from MS. So i'm rather annoyed that in order to view the demo video you have to already have the thing installed. does that make sense? neat idea, but i'm not installing it until i have a better idea what it's benefits are (and any drawbacks).

it is just like flash it is very small and does nothing to your computer except allow you to view webpages that use it like flash does or java does

does anyone else see the irony in microsoft releasing software which could lead to being less tied to windows as an os

noelie nice sentiment but I wont play the violin just yet. If Micro$uck produce it's own flash player then they are only doing it to put someone else out of a job and they "are regular guys (and gals) like you and me. For many of them it's a job (possibly the job of a lifetime). For many of them they just want to get on in life, pay their bills and raise their kids or whatever. They'd also like to get a promotion and a pay raise" as you put it.

If Gates and his little cronnie's want to do something then they can concentrate on getting there third rate operating system's working properly before attacking someone's jobs. The difference between Micro$ucks and Apple is that while they both are in the computer industry Apple cater for its own market and isn't trying to take over the whole industry, while Micro$ucks wants the lot.

As it is now the choices are getting smaller by the day and if we are not careful we'll wake up tomorrow and Micro$ucks will own everything then where would we be - knee deep in shit. There will be no choice you'll use what your given or go without. The IT industry will be locked up so tight no one will be able to provide any kind of new software because there wont be a platform to use it on. And if by chance there were to be any new software it would be so expensive because of the fee they will have to pay to Micro$ucks no one will be able to afford it anyway.

The argument isn't that Micro$ucks stole the idea of a flash player and made there own version but more where it may eventually lead. The results could be far more damaging for all of us. Once Micro$ucks gains control of the industry we will have to subscribe to everything and it will then be a very very expensive hobby in deed.

My only gripe is that rather than using the already established and available Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) language, Microsoft is doing their own thing with XAML. They're going down the same path they took with Internet Explorer -- "Yes, we support web standards, OUR web standards."

If developers have to code things differently for Flash and Silverlight, that's not going to make adaptation of Sliverlight very attractive.

my sentiments exactly. and flash is well established. they'll need to learn the hard way.

So is this an MS version of Flash then? What is it with Microsoft creating their own versions of other software. Javascript -> Microsoft's JScript. PHP -> Microsoft's ASP (Not going anywhere near the operating system :p ). And what gets me is people actually use these because it's Microsoft when the original is good enough.

noelie your idea might be to screw over everyone and put them out of business mine is not.And sadly that kind of attitude seems to be becoming more and more common.

I don't have a problem with free market and everyone having to opportunity to provide goods and services to all. If you conduct your business ethically and provide good service to your clients I find nothing wrong with that.

I'm not talking about some form of corporate socialism or even communism but being givien the chance to follow your choosen career path and given a fair opportunity to try your ideas. No one can be all things to all people so the only thing is to provide your services to clients in a professional manner and create a niche market for yourself. Perhaps you may succeed or maybe not but at least you were given a chance.

You may feel it is just paranoia about Micro$ucks taking over the computer and software world but it isn't that far fetched. The US have been pushing globalisation for years and not because they give a shit about anyone else but because they want to dominate the world's markets. Gates and his little cronies will certainly try to take over the IT Industry and i'm sure we would rebel against it and find a way around it but I would prefer that it didn't happen in the first place. In the process of this happening just think how many great ideas would be lost.

 So nice to see that silly little things like DeCss, DRM and all that have been by-passed on a grand scale. Funny My copy of Vista works just fine too but then mine doesn't need to be authenticated either and still gets regular updates and passes the Genuine Windows test as well (strange how a copy of it just fell onto my computer).

Working in the IT Industry I never miss a chance to steer clients away from M$ and I don't see a problem using any software you like (payment however may be an other story. <cheesy grin>

Actually its probably not going to fail. Its most likely going to be pushed over windows update soon, or at least included in service pack one. Plus major content distributors have already begun to use it. Including Major League Baseball, CBS and Netflix have all built applications in silverlight. Even the Bejing Olmypics is going to be using silverlight.

As for having to put your files on MS servers, you dont. Its a free service they offer to people who dont have the network capacity to stream HD video, so they can opt to use Microsoft's Content Distribution Network. Also, registering is not an issue. The people who are going to be the early adopters for silverlight are probably already developing with Microsoft software, and are use to logging in. Ask any professional .net developer, they are probably downloaded Microsofts Application Blocks.

The difference between Micro$ucks and Apple is that while they both are in the computer industry Apple cater for its own market
Which is why they make the iPhone, Apple Tv and the iPod...because they are sticking to the computer market.

And as for not using existing standards, the reason they are using XAML is because Silverlight is based on Windows Presentation Foundation, which uses XAML, you cant use SVG to do the things they wanted to do with XAML.

Apple stick with great hardware and software. Microsoft seem to be in every frigging market going.

but they dont really make hardware unless they need to ie xbox they didn't want to make zune but provided portable media centre software and since hardly anyone used it they made the zune

all i am saying is microsoft is a software company where as apple are a hardware and software company

Whats really interesting about the aQuantive, is that they own Avenua A | Razorfish, wich is an avertisting firm, so it will be interesting to see if Microsoft keepts them.

I didn't notice that the file storage was optional but great if it is. As for .net developers - that's kinda my point isn't it? If you're already 'with' Microsoft in some way you'll be using it.
Exactly. Its a foot in the door. The people already on board the Microsoft train start using it, thus people start downloading it and increasing its penetration. At that point people who dont use .net for their back end will try it, like the .net support and possiably switch their systems from PHP/Java/Whatever.

Also if you want to check out the netflix app, and others, go here: http://www.visitmix.com/ and watch the video on page 3. Its actually pretty cool.
