^Actually I was just showing the first picture of the "Coming Soon" sign outside a store front in a mall.

Seems, that pic got taken down from whereever it was being hosted.

It might be a last resort for Microsoft... Just think if Apple made a laptop that was below $500 Microsoft would be done for...

^ Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.......

I don't think it's last resort but I do think MS has gone down a tired, old road too many times. They have an "anything you can do we can do better" approach and it's hurting them. They really took their eye off the ball with Vista and spending so much money chasing markets they really have no real need or expertise in possibly spread them thin. Why do they need a search engine? Because they want one. Why do they need a MS store? Because Apple has one. Part of me applauds the move as anything that costs them money and diminishes their market share is a good thing. Unfortunately, you're talking about a company that could lose half their market share tomorrow and still eclipse all of their competition combined.
Well there is alway the thing where they have had a search engine forever, and are simply making it good for once.

The store is something I don't understnad myself, but it doesn't cause the loss of marketshare of anything. If anything, it will help marketshare and sell some Zune's, and with the Zune HD and all the free good press they are getting with it, it will be a strong number two.

I liked Vista, it was good, but whatev. They solved the problem none the less with Windows 7, that people are finding a hard time putting down. It is just that good.

Oh so the picture got removed.

Well regardless, if you are an apple fan it's a win win.

For one if they open right next to an apple store they are most likely going to get their asses kicked. However, if they for some reason take off and sell a lot and even start to outdo apple. Than apple will have to fight back and either come up with some amazingly new awesome innovation or lower their prices.

So no matter what I think it's a win win.

I think it's a good idea for them. Think about how many people use and buys Microsoft items everyday. So, they should do well having a physical store.

I like Microsoft products, so of course I like this. I wonder if one will open up near MPLS? soon? *can't wait! SQUEE* XD

Microsoft Store concierge:

Hello, and welcome to the Microsoft Home, Small Business and Enterprise sales outlet for Microsoft software, hardware and peripherals. If you'd like to look at Microsoft operating systems or software for your home, please walk to the left of the ground floor. If you'd like to see software for small business use, take the rear stairs to the first floor, turn left and head to the back. If you'd like to see software for Enterprise business functions, take the elevator to the second floor, turn right and speak to our second floor concierge for more instructions. If you're interested in Microsoft music players and services, take the front stairs to the mezzanine level until you hear loud music, then turn left, then right, and go through the soundproof doors. If you're interested in Microsoft peripheral hardware, go back out of the store, down the street into the rear lane, through the loading dock to the warehouse space and ask to speak to the Peripherals manager. If at any time you'd like to leave the store, just come back here to where you started and I'll explain our exit procedure. Enjoy your stay!

Hi, welcome to the Apple Store. Come in and look around.

Not really. Apple isn't that great, and Microsoft still dominates the market. It will be a good place to get some problems fixed with your comp. You can go in and see new comps for little Jimmy's graduation present or for college. The new Zune HD is around the corner, and Windows 7 is just amazing.

Not to mention it will have the surface stuff in there. Probably have a dedicated display for Xbox 360, which will attract eye balls.

Not to mention, everything in the store will be cheaper than Apple's store.

If MS does it right, they could have a good store on their hands.

The majority of computer buyers don't care about the Mac/PC debate or fight.

I didn't say they haven't had search for awhile nor did I say the store diminishes market share. I think it detracts resources from that which they do well or should do well. They should focus on their core instead of chasing markets where they simply can't establish dominance. Therein lies the problem. MS wants dominance so they can't just let it go. The stores will likely fail. MS doesn't make hardware. Speculation is that HP will come in as a partner and sell systems there. They will have to have some kind of hardware presence.
Actually, if they do this store right, it will most likely increase their market share in all the fields they sell in.

MS already throws enough money at their core markets. No one still comes close to the dominance of Windows and Office. Windows Vista was a hick up, but it wasn't for lack of money, it was too much corporate oversight, and them not working so good together. When they went into making Windows 7, they changed how they usually make Windows. Because of that, they have a awesome OS on their hands.

And MS is actually happy playing no. 2 in sections that are not Windows and Office. They are really planning for the long time future.

MS has Bing, now coupled with Yahoo. Their market share in the search business now jumped from the 8% (it used to be 3% before Bing) to 25% of the search business. They are going to let Yahoo do what it does best, and sell adds etc.

Xbox 360 has been a loss leader for YEARS and now they are finally starting to see some minimal return on it. And coupled with all the new services that keep coming out with the 360, it could easily be dominant with the next gen console, or hell with the 360 still. Because Sony messed up up it's release of PS3, all the cards started aligning for MS and Nintendo.

The Zune is actually a great device. It is better than the non-ipod Touch devices, and with the Zune HD, it will simply be better than all iPod's. It is actually getting lots of hype and praise from usually hardened MS bashers. A lot of people are excited for the devices release. A lot of people wish it would be made into a phone, and it might be. Who knows. And now the Zune will tie into the 360.

360 and Zune are now one team (coupled with another team or something) so better intergration of products is happening.

This got me thinking. Maybe there should be a Linux store too...

... But then the store would have to close in a month when rent was due :( Stores just can't give shit away for free all the time.

As weird as this sounds for me... I hope this does good for them. They might be able to reconnect with their core and reinforce it.
You guys could always sell troubleshooting.

No doubt people will be wondering what this is and that.

I am not sure if you forgot or not but Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are coming out very soon.

The majority of computer buyers who don't do research about computers and just buy whatever computer don't care about the debate. But the rest do :P

I am not saying that apple is dominating over microsoft right now. That might never happen. But with microsoft's cheaper prices and loyal and tainted customers. Than apple sure as hell is going to have to step up in one form or another.

Eh I've played with a zune. I donno I just don't like it. I was ALWAYS able to change the tracks and volume on my Mini iPod even when it was just in my pocket. But for some reason the zune is just too bulky. The interface isn't too bad.

It would be kinda cool if they showed off new 360 games in the store.

It will be interesting to watch the result of them trying to be like apple I guess.

Nooot really.

When Windows 7 comes out, and no one complains about it, then the sales will spark up fast. Hell, right now people are hard pressed to find a problem with Windows 7.

You seem to think millions of people will suddenly flock to buy new mocks (well more millions than usual) the truth is, more people use Vista than OS X. And the majority of those people don't think about it.

The only thing Apple has a leg up in is iPods and iPhones. And in those markets, MS doesn't care to be number 1. Although, if it happens, they are happy to take it.

You can easily track your tracks and volume in your pocket with your Zune if you bothered to try. Click to the side to change tracks if you must, up and down for volume.

Where you get that it's bulky is anyones guess.

Ugh! Trying to be like Apple. People act like MS isn't a business or something that has to compete. I guess when they do realize that, they will stop thinking MS is copying everything, and OHHHH competing.

I think MS should def open stores next to apple stores all around the country...Apple stores will look even better in comparison.

Is Windows 7 really all that and a bag of chips? I've been holding out with my XP x64 setup, but if 7 is as good as I've been hearing I'm gonna be first in line to pick up a copy when it launches.

Yep, it is absolutely amazing.

You will thuroughly enjoy it. But then again, anything is better than XP at this stage. Even Vista.
