Microsoft to buy Yahoo

^ I'm going to try to support Yahoo by staying with them until the day Microsoft completes its acquisition - then I'm gone. It seems lots of yahoo users have already begun abandoning ship. There is even a new discussion group on Flickr, "Microsoft, Keep your Evil, Grubby Hands off our Flickr"

Some of the pics are pretty funny. Check them out.

Somehow I just don't think it will happen...Microsoft have offered next to nothing for the shares

^ It'll happen. Microsoft is overpaying for Yahoo by quite a lot. That's why there haven't been any other bidders, although Yahoo would certainly prefer to merge with someone other than Microsoft.

Yahoo's board is obligated to try to get more money for the company, even though the current offer is too much. They are almost obligated to reject Microsoft's first offer out of hand. But this is a VERY hostile takeover attempt. Microsoft has indicated it will seek to replace Yahoo's board if they continue to try to resist. There is very little Yahoo will be able to do to stop this, in the end.

There is almost nobody in either the computer or the business fields who thinks this merger is a good idea for Microsoft. In fact, many experts are calling this the beginning of the end for Microsoft. By the time the merger is completed, the online presence of the combined companies will likely only be a little better than Microsoft's alone is now. In other words, Microsoft is likely to spend several tens of billions of dollars without any tangible benefit whatsoever. Yahoo may be able to manipulate the bidding price up a little bit, so Microsoft will probably end up paying something close to $50 billion for Yahoo in the end. That is waaaaaay too much. The weird thing about these mergers is that everyone but everyone can see the disaster that is so obviously coming, except the suitor itself. But that's the way it always seems to be with these mergers. The suiting party is bound and determined to destroy themselves, and no amount of reason is ever sufficient to dissuade them.

If any of you own stock in Microsoft, sell it now.

I think the previous 2 posters missed my post. (#30- Yahoo *declined* Microsoft's offer)

^ No, we didn't. As I said above, Yahoo's board is obligated to say no at first and reject this offer.

If they continue to try to resist, Microsoft will have Yahoo's board replaced with members who are more "reasonable." Yahoo can't fight this.

Microsoft will survive, of course, but this is going to hurt them quite a lot.

I like how Yahoo! said the asking price undervalued the company. Google maybe, but Yahoo!...no.

Steve Ballmer said he would keep the Yahoo brand. It will just be under the umbrella of Microsoft. This mean Yahoo will remain up and running. but with some new stuff coming out and Microsoft taking the profits.

^ Nope. The Yahoo name will continue, but Microsoft will destroy it completely. Microsoft won't be able to stop themselves from doing this. That is their nature.

Microsoft now buys about 12 companies per year, 115 since 1986. Not one of the mergers is believed ever to have worked out. Not one! But they've never bitten off anything like the size of yahoo. This is going to hurt them a lot.
