So, last year I applied for this exchange program that the US government is promoting over the world. It grants students a full ride and even paid flights so they can take either a semester or a year in the states. It was directed to students who came from lower and lower-middle class, to give opportunities to study abroad for students who were normally not capable to do so becuase of their economic situation. I applied through the US embassy here, everything looked perfect, they said my essay was the best of all of the ones among the applicants. But, right when the final selection was to be made, I was rejected.
When I asked on the reason, they told me that Washington's team had rejected me on the basis of me having worked my Freshmen year, because to them that meant that sudying was not my real priority, and also, becuase I had taking few courses earlier on and have taken longer to graduate and they value "eficiency". Well as I told the embassy cultural affairs agent, if I hadn't worked my Freshmen year, I wouldn't have been able to pay for school, and the following few courses I took were few, because they were all I could afford until I got the scholarhip I currently have.
I felt it was contradictory of them to reject me when they had already inquired on my reasons for working and taking few classes during that time and the program was supposed to be looking for people, like myself, that don't have the money to take such chances and pay for their tuition easily or for studies abroad. She felt terrible about it, and I could tell, and she even apologized and said she had been sure I would get it, but that it had been out of her power since she sent my application to Washington.
Well, I thought that was part of the past. However, earlier this year, she contacted me and told me of a new program, this one is for a month during the summer, taking seminars on US culture, how its changed and local cultural differences in some states. I would be sent to a random state, take general US culture classes, classes about the state I was in and then attend a conference in Washington the last week with all the other participants. I didn't want to apply, but she sort of convinced me, I had to write a new essay, which they loved, get a recommendation letter, which more than one of my profs readily offered, and turn in some info. Well, now they say I really got it. The thing is, I am still skeptical, I feel like any time now they're going to do like last time and tell me that it's off. Although, the seminars start on july 11, so there's not much time for them to change their mind, or is there? I am getting my passport (I don't have one because I have never been to anywhere outside my country), but I still have that bad feeling that they might say its off all of a sudden...

Well I hope this all works out for you and you get a great placement. It seems official so be sure to have that passport and anything else you need in order. Check to see if you need a visa as well. Good luck. I hope it turns out to be a wonderful experience for you.

A journey begins with the first step. Life is all about journeys, so whether it be good or bad, it will make you what you'll become. Enjoy it when you're there even though you might think you're not :D ..|

That's something nice, I only have to get the passport and some medical papers (a statement of me being healthy and some vaccines) but they get the visa, all of the other paperwork, and will pay for everything else, I don't have to pay for anything aside the passport.

Sounds like a great opportunity. If it was me, I'd love to spend a month in Costa Rica on the same program! (Except that I don't speak Spanish.)

The random state thing is intriguing. Be sure and let us know when you find out which state it is. I believe JUB has people in all 50 states, and they can give you helpful advice or even meet up with you...

Well, I still don't know, and another thing is that I took a flash summer course during january to march (that is costarican summer) and it was too hard, so I ended up flunking it. It's been the first I've flunked in a long time and I don't think they're going to be happy about it. Although, in the requirements they sent me when I applied, I wasn't asked to present any grade transcripts, but they already had my grades from last year when I applied for the other one. Still, it's 2 months away so I'm not sure whether they would turn me down over one failed course from a year in which I took 49 credits and passed all other courses with high grades.

I hope it works out for you!! :)

49 credits in one year says something about your motivation!! Good luck - hope you get it and have a super time!!! :gogirl:

While you are in Washington, I'll have to take you out and show you the town! lol! I hope you can come.....

luis if you have the opportunity to come to the states then go with it.

i think this will be a great opportunity for you to broaden your horizons, get away and travel on your own... it sounds like a great thing to me.

best of luck to you! i hope you'll keep us up to date. :)

Ok, so I already have a meeting to do the paperwork for the passport. I e-mailed the embassy agent that is running the paperwork and she said that now I just need to inform her of when I get it so I can go down there with it to confirm it's in order. She says so far they dont' need me to do anything, but if there is something then she'll let me know.
1. I hope I get sent to Texas, that way I can hang out with you, GL, and with my buddy who was down here earlier in the year. And 2. I didn't remember you're in DC, Tom! I just hope that if I get it, then I'll have enough time when in DC so we can hang out!

No, no, no! Do not come here! (To the US of A)

It fucking sucks.

Do you seriously want to get infected with right-wing flu?

Do you seriously want to get infected with Fox News (Fox falsification? Faux News?)

There are so many people in this country (USA) that want to go to Costa Rica. Why reverse the trend? You are much better off where you are.

The USA is not the "promised" land.

Hope you get the opportunity, regardless of what one of the Jubber says, I love the USA. Every country has their flaws, but I say you need to explore the horizons, leave no stone unturned, etc etc.

Let us know what state you go to, and what university when you get the chance. I doubt you'd make it my way (University of Alabama) but who knows right? Whereever you end up, it will be an enriching experience that you can take back and hold dear the rest of your life. I've tried study abroad programs in several Latin American countries and in Europe but so far i've been denied everytime. Gotta love it

I'll just be there for a month... And it's taking classes, it's not like I'm moving in to work at a burger joint... Well, I have my passport set, dropped in the info they needed from it so far, so I'm just waiting for them to let me know some info or requirements. And believe me, Costa Rica has worse stuff than fox or right wing flu, it has the catholic church telling the government what laws can be passed or rejected and a president who sets a law forbidding re-election and then comes 20 years later to file about 30 lawsuits to get the law eliminated so he can go back into power and make sure his family stays filthy rich for the next couple of hundred years.

It's on. I'll be going to a small town in western New York, will travel around some and might make a stop in AZ before going to DC. I just need to finish some paperwork and then wait til next month. :D

Do you know which town? There's some JUBbers in Western NY who you might want to meet up with...
