Military Meets, Exceeds Recruiting Goals

WASHINGTON -- Though Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the war in Iraq, the Pentagon said Tuesday it is having success enlisting new troops. The Navy and Air Force met their recruiting goals last month while the Army and Marine Corps exceeded theirs, the Defense Department announced.

The Army, which is bearing the brunt of the work in Iraq, did the best. It signed up 6,485 new recruits in November compared with its target of 6,150 - meaning 105 percent of its goal.

All the services turned in similar performances in October as well, meaning they so far are meeting their goals for the 2007 budget year that began Oct. 1.

"The services are starting off well," said Maj. Stewart Upton, a Pentagon spokesman.

The progress in recruiting comes as U.S. pessimism over the Iraq campaign mounts, according to a recent AP-Ipsos poll. Some 63 percent of Americans said they don't expect a stable, democratic government to be established in Iraq, up from 54 percent who felt that way in June.

Dissatisfaction with President Bush's handling of Iraq has climbed to an all-time high of 71 percent, according to the AP-Ipsos survey this month. A bipartisan commission last week released its recommendations for a new course and the president held a series of meetings this week to hear from his advisers.

According to figures released Tuesday by the Pentagon, the Navy signed up 2,887 recruits last month, or 100 percent of its goal; Marines signed up 2,095, or 104 percent of its 2,012 target and the Air Force signed up all 1,877 it was seeking.

The Army also met its goal in the 2006 budget year after missing its target in fiscal year 2005 for the first time since 1999. It added recruiters and offered recruits bonuses to help attract more to the service.

The Army has been recruiting about 80,000 people a year, setting differing monthly goals depending on the time of the year.

Though the active services are doing well, recruiting has lagged for the Army Reserve and Navy Reserve, officials said.

The Army Reserve last month signed up 1,888, or just 79 percent of its 2,376 goal and the Navy Reserve signed up 687 recruits, or just 91 percent of its 755 goal.

Wow someone must agree with the war. I thought no one did.....HMMM...

I heard on ABC news the other night that a lot of corruption has been uncovered in the efforts put out to achieve those recruitment goals, and an investigation is supposed to be launched. Apparently there was a lot of fast and loose promise-making, among other things.

Of course, some of the recruits may be the sort I saw a number of when I was in college: guys whose financial situation was lousy, and unemployment was high enough they despaired of getting a job, so... off to the guaranteed pay check, sucking off the taxpayer -- Constitutionally, I'll grant.

However they come I don't know. I was deployed a few years ago and people were scrapin to get in or stay in while I was at sea. Now that I am working manning, it seems i get a call every other day for guys who wanna come back after seeing how civillian jobs are with lazy non working idiots and lousy jobs available. That call rate is kinda alarming to me considering i represent only 2000 person constituency of the Navy's total 350, 000.

Well I was by no means well off.. but i could survived any way I had to. Of course now I own several homes and will have a six figure job here when i finish this 20 year horrible job.....oh wait it was awesome I forgot......hmmm

The thing the article doesn't tell you is that the military (namely the army) has greatly lowered the requirements for service. They now accept former (heavy) drug users, felons, and others with criminal backgrounds. And this is in addition to the "questionable" practices of recruiters as of late. BUT, they still will kick out arabic linguists for being gay...](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Many armies have recruited felons. The French Foreign Legion didn't care what your background was, so long as you could do the job -- I agree.
Lowering the standards bothers me, though.

The did lower the bar however it only went from 17 percent of American youth being eligible to 25%. Still a small percentage of America can actually meet the needs or pass the test. Of course the community I am in is among the top 2% of intelligence in the Navy much less the DOD. Any Army folks I have worked with certainly seemed a lot less mentally capable and the last time i worked with them was 97. So the long and short of it is that it really doesnt take a rocket surgeon to carry a piece and shoot, just check out South Central someday.

BTW the bar was coming down anyways as piercings and lowered standards at home have reduced the available candidates to unmanageable levels.

Lowering the bar for tattoos and piercings (or even intelligence) is one thing, but lowering it to admit convicts is quite another. I don't want to have to wonder if the guy next to me served time on a drug and/or concealed weapon charge. I would SERIOUSLY question his ability to follow orders when the shit hits the fan let alone protecting my ass and my fellow soldiers. In any cased, the point of my post was to point out the blatant hypocrisy. The military would rather have a convicted felon or drug user in the fight than a gay or lesbian. Also, and I'm not saying your numbers are wrong because, frankly, I don't know what the increase in available candidates went up to, but where did you get your figures from (17% up to 25%)? I haven't seen anything that reports those numbers.

I currently run a portion of manning for our Navy. I see all sorts of reports that speculate and project numbers.

Did you know that the Armies missed goal was really the cart before the horse? They had upped their goal after the wheels were in motion to meet the old goals. It went from like 77000 to 80000 and they missed the 80 by about 6750. The manning system is using about 1.5 years out from actual service and so they project far ahead.

BTW Kul, piercings and tribal tats are un professional...so they put the bar above them. They are becoming so common that we had already discussed lowering to reach different folks who had an interest.

I still am around a lot of guys who are in the 18-21 age brackett. You'd be surprised how a lot of them want to join the military to escape. You have to understand that they don't believe they can go to college and start a career. They feel inadequate. To them, the army means a future (believe it or not). They believe all the benefits the military says they can have (college tuition, health benefits, job skills). In addition, they feel like the military can make them into men. Yes, men. There are a lot of guys who feel insecure about their masculinity and feel like the military can make them mature. I'm serious!

Example: I asked my cousin why he joined the Marines. He told me, "Because they can teach me responsibility and to be better. I don't have the self-control I should." And you know what? He was right about himself. He was a party animal and couldn't keep a girlfriend without cheating on her. Now he's out there in Iraq. I pray every night the military's project of "making him into a man" doesn't bring him back home in a closed coffin.
