The Pentagon has advised recruiting commands that they can accept openly gay and lesbian recruit candidates, given the recent federal court decision that bars the military from expelling openly gay service members, according to a Pentagon spokeswoman.
The guidance from the Personnel and Readiness office was sent to recruiting commands on Friday, according to spokeswoman Cynthia Smith.
The recruiters were told that if a candidate admits he or she is openly gay, and qualify under normal recruiting guidelines, their application can be processed. Recruiters are not allowed to ask candidates if they are gay as part of the application process.

they also said to advise the candidates that if the court order is overturned they may be discharged.

so its one small step at a time.

So, will the recruits have to go back in the closet if the administration's appeal of DADT is successful?

unknown

the administration's appeal is not guaranteed to suceed. I think they know it will fail or they wouldn't be doing it.

If Obama is succesful in continuing to deny us our rights, those who signed up as openly gay will be discharged as such.

^ My point exactly.

So, you're still forced to hide your homosexuality as a recruit (if you want to be sure to remain Active Duty).

So, nothing has changed.

Exaclty what I'm thinking. It doesn't make sense to me.

If someone comes out and then the policy goes back to the way it was, it seems like a big waste of money that's being invested in these recruits to get them into basic training, equipment, uniforms, food, etc and then only to release them from their contracts down the line.

You should enlist to see if they are really accepting gay applicants.

Tell us how it goes.

Looking forward to the postcard from bootcamp.

Have you ever been in the armed forces? Did you go to Iraq and Afghanistan and fight Bush's wars?

I bet you a million dollars you haven't.

If you're willing to bet that the courts rebuff Obama and let the lower court ruling stand, then you win and get to stay. If he gets a stay or it gets overturned, you're screwed. The safe play is to lie. And what of those who have been thrown out and wish to rejoin? And what of those who were thrown out and are no doubt going to sue if this gets overturned. Quite a mess!
