I need to get out of here ( Navajo Reservation); there's no opportunities for work or anything else for that matter. I'm gearing up to sell/pawn most of my stuff and start over. I have done some reading on the city but I haven't really seen how the gay situation is over there. I hear that it is a very segregated city but I feel that people are over exaggerating.

If anyone lives there/nearby please tell me what it is like out there. Thanks =D

It's also very hard to find work there.

What are your job skills or preferences and what kind of education do you have under your belt?

I'm considering Milwaukee since I have an aunt already over there and she has invited me to stay with her and help me out until I get on my feet.

I have worked mostly retail off and on since i was 18. I also was an installer for dish network and directv. Recently though, I worked for a piping company: water lines, sewage, gas lines, and anything else pipe related. Preferably I would like to get back into retail. I think Costco would be a great place to work but I'm sure it's VERY competitive to get hired.

Education-wise, I only completed one year of school. I couldn't afford to go anymore so I ended up just working ever since. If everything works out, I would like to establish residency and go to one of the universities.

And yes, I am a grammar nazi =D. But how did ya garner that from my post? I'm guessing it was the parenthesis and semicolon?

The Gay situation in MKE is ok; gets old quickly, though. MKE is no longer as segregated as it once was, and has really gentrified in the last 10-15 years. It still is quite rough in spots, though. Milwaukee will probably never be the city it was in its heyday (although it didn't go quite as bad as Detroit )

Jobs, like any other Midwestern locale are difficult at best to come by, though. Which is why I no longer call the Midwest 'home.' Despite the suck-ass winters, I miss the Midwest.

There are jobs for people with language and math skills even in heavier industries if you don't mind getting dirty....... .......
A HUGE problem for companies hiring is finding people with even rudimentary math and language skills.......

From New Mexico to Wisconsin? That's a curious choice. Do you think that you'll be able to adapt to such changes in climate? I'd imagine that it is less humid in your area than in the Midwestern United States.

It shouldn't be too bad. I used to live in Carmel, Indiana. The humidity there was tolerable. Actually, it was quite nice. It was a welcome change from the bone dry air here in New Mexico; negative dew points anyone?. The only time I hated it was when I was crawling around in people's attics (running coaxial cable) in 90 degree weather with a high dew point

I'm really excited about being right next to Chicago too. I've never spent time in any major city and I'm looking forward to traveling down there to hang out and meet new people.

Todwod: Milwaukee is a city of marked contrasts. First, the positives:

• Although property taxes are high, rental rates are not, so relatively cheap housing helps to keep the cost of living down.
• The gay community is fairly large, diverse, and relatively accepted.
• There are tons of bars and restaurants, including high-end ones, so you won't have a problem finding a casual or formal place to eat.
• Goods and services tend to be reasonably priced, including clothing (people really are cheap here).
• Arts and theatre are surprisingly strong for a city of this size.
• There are about 80,000 college students in the area, many of them at Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee, so if you do decide to return to school, you won't be alone and you'll have plenty of options (ditto for the number of smaller private colleges and technical schools).

Now for the negatives:

• The city's cold nine months of the year -- no exaggeration there. It's also very overcast and it can get somewhat depressing. Winters usually involve one, two or three major snowstorms that can shut the city down (as in being unable to go anywhere) for several hours. Summers tend to be brief and cool, unless you live well inland. Temperatures can be ten to fifteen degrees cooler by the lake.
• The job situation can be difficult, especially in manufacturing. (The bright spots are banking, insurance, financial services and health care.)
• The cost of health care is very high, due in part to every major health care provider continually building new and more expensive facilities.
• Mass transit is limited in scope and constantly being underfunded locally and regionally.
• Milwaukee's one of the most segregated cities in the country and, as such, the city's being held back in many areas (transportation and employment being two prime examples.)
