I know very little about cars... I drive a Ford Focus because it was the only car in my price-range that had any head-room.
But when Coopers first started appearing on the streets of my town, I had this inexplicable urge to take a baseball bat and visit grave violence upon them. I've gotten used to them, and have transferred my aesthetic aggression to the Scion and the Element (how can a machine be that ugly?) but I still don't care for them much.
If I were to buy a commuter car, I would test drive several and decide which one felt best against my rump, exterior styling bedamned. If you're going to spend more than an hour in traffic, you want to be comfortable. For all my frivolity, I'm a practical driver, so for me it's all about the cup-holder placement and the stereo system and the cruise-control and the five-way-adjustable seat. Gas mileage is another concern, and for me trunk-space is necessary; but really, who cares what it looks like from the outside? What difference does zero-to-sixty make when you're sitting in stop-and-go traffic all morning?
