When I first signed up here, I was naive enough to think that hot avatars were pictures of JUB members. Obviously not cartoons or images. But where I saw a picture of a guy, I assumed it was the member himself. I was amazed how stunning so many are. But it seems that this is not actually the case.

So why do guys choose a hot picture of someone else? Is it how you wish you look? Are you in the closet? Are you the Elephant Man?

Just show who you are, for God's sake! It's 2012.

Quite evident from the Christmas hat, I am just lazy to change it.

If I bothered to show my face, I will be more ignored than ever.

Avatars ARE meant to mislead. Especially for:
1). Guys with attraction to inanimate objects
2). Guys who dig pictures
3). Guys who want to attract straight guys that they pull out the boobiest female avatar, hoping to later lead toward an inexplicable blow scene, which is like receiving Schrodinger's cat.

:p

N.B. Ram is playing hard to get with Lil'Bit  :-$

I am on loads of forums though not gay ones. In general people have pictures of themselves. It's called a human touch.

Ok I'll fess up. I watched the film Milk again tonight so it got me to wondering just how far our evolution has progressed as queer folk and whether hiding behind non representational images of ourselves is related to that.

I don't think it's that deep with us internet people. Frankly, these non-representational images tell us more about the person than actual images of themselves.

Sorry, my bigotry shows. I should have said USING non representational images, not hiding behind. But it's out there now.

My avatar is me.

I can't stand people who hide behind cartoons or cute little animals.

So phoney.

I wouldn't say the images are not representative. To many JUBbers, I believe, including me, the avatars are reflections of ourselves.

I used to have the odd pic of myself as an avvy from time to time during the past 8 years or so that i've been here ... but I got tired of seeing my face gurning out at me every time I browsed the the forum. :clown:

I usually just have a pic that suits whatever my current nom-de-JUB happens to be.

I'm furry, cuddly and rainbow-y. so I'd say my avatar is me :p

I wish I were a lion eating a giraffe. :-(.

But in forums your picture can be almost anything. If I put a hot guy's pic as an avatar, he'd have to be a guy I'd want to bangbangbang

I have a nerdy look in real life so I chose a nerdy photo of Elvis Costello as my avatar. :)

I chose the actor with the handsome face and stare because it is more intense and represents my thoughts better than my pic.

If I were to put my own face there, my attractiveness or lack thereof would upstage much of what I post, including the humor.

Far from "hiding" behind Mr. Tzanetakos' image, my profile plainly has my real photo there, which no one has asked to see more often.
It's not a dating site, so accurate avatars shouldn't be an issue.

It's odd that you find it disturbing, considering the interactions ARE very personal here.

QFT
I would like also to emphasize the fact this is not a dating site, for most of us who post here is more about what someone has to say rather than how they look.
Not seeing people faces helps concentrate on what they are saying and not being distracted or influenced by their bad/good looks or by their age (and we all know we are influenced by the way someone looks)
