Moldovan Christians Tear Down Hanukkah Menorah

Just watched the vid. My impressions: 1) We got no idea of what went down, not valid to judge.

Just a gist of what he said:

“The Jews can try to kill us, to traumatize our children,” but Moldovan Orthodox believers will resist. Moldova was an Orthodox country, and the Jewish people are trying to dominate people. Allowing the menorah to be set up had been a sacrilege, an indulgence of state power today. The Cross here on our flag is our symbol, we will protect our nation with the holy cross! No Jew will oppress us in our own nation!”

And:

"We are an Orthodox country. Stephan the Great defended our country from all kinds of k*kes, and now they come and put their menorah here. This is anarchy."

The farther east you go the further back in time.

Oh, and they should at least know they don't have a cross on their flag.

If you knew what happened to Jews in this same city just a few decades ago, you'd understand why it is anything but moderate.

Kuli was commenting on this specific event, which WAS moderate as far as hateful religious protests go.

Taken in light of what happened during WWII, it becomes more serious, yes. However, what happened doesn't really match your description of 'tearing down' (I was imagining an angry mob of christians literally tearing down a menorah and destroying it), and really IS moderate as far as these kinds of things go.

Jewish News Agency reports that a group of some 200 Christians, led by a priest tore down the Menorah and replaced it with a cross in the public square of the Moldovan Capital.

Watch the whole spectacle here: http://www.jurnal.md/ro/news/exclusiv-momentele-profanarii-video-73432/

They are orthodox. Over here a Greek priest got really rich by charging money for weddings, christenings and he own a school as part of his church.

So religion is a business with volunteers where the leaders got rich/powerful.

I'm not about to debate you on what offends whom how much. Many whites who have nothing to do with the KKK aren't offended by their rallies, but a Black American knows exactly what they represent...nothing happens in a vacuum, and you can maintain your "really IS moderate" feeling. Moderate hate...that is something. The priest spewed "moderate" hate, right? Simply amazing...

Good god. Over-sensitive much? Sounds like you need to take a break from here, because you're spewing your man-period all over the rest of us.

What they did is offensive. No one's arguing that it wasn't. But based on your description I was imagining a mob of angry christians forcibly tearing down a menorah, which did not occur.

(and for the record, many, many whites are offended by the KKK, something of which you obviously know nothing about)

I have no control over what you imagine. The post was not about the manner or method that was used, its about what it represents.

I didn't say whites are not offended, I said many aren't. There is a big difference. "something of which you obviously know nothing about"....presumptuous much? Interesting how the thread went from discussing hate to how I react to hate.

What did you expect from the people who tried to kill the cast of "Dynasty?"

On a more serious note, the Orthodox Churches have always been extremely anti-semitic.

I know alot about orthodox (greek).
They seems to be very un-educated religious wise. They only follow what the priest says which is wrong. Hence orthodox religion is inferior than other christian religion.

More that you exaggerating what actually happened doesn't serve any purpose. What they did was hateful. What they did was wrong. You don't need to exaggerate in order to get that point across.

It actually hardly matters what your perception of my post is, as its evident from our interaction on a few other threads where you are getting at. "Tear Down" is exactly how the European Union Times, Baltimore Jewish Times, and other news agencies described the event. Look up the definition of "tear down" if it helps you, one of them is "to pull down", or "to pull apart". ](*,) Talk about Moldova or the article if you like.

I've googled this topic -- not much out there except from different jewish newspapers. Most use the same text. Some use the adjective fundamental to describe the Christian group.

What I could not find was any information on why they were so upset and supposedly tore down the menorah. It's funny to me that there is no video showing the people tear down the menorah. I've found that that is usually more to the story -- I wonder what we weren't told here.

In the USA Christian symbols are regularly torn down by political correctness and many times by the ACLU.

Read the original post, there is a link there to the video.

Oh, they have their reasons, in the word's of the priest:
“The Jews can try to kill us, to traumatize our children,” but Moldovan Orthodox believers will resist. Moldova was an Orthodox country, and the Jewish people are trying to dominate people. I wonder what else you wanted to hear...

In the USA Christian symbols are regularly torn down by political correctness and many times by the ACLU.

Irrelevant to the incident that this post is about. Saying bigoted and hateful things about a minority group, and replacing their sacred symbol with one of your own is not equivalent to ACLU's attempts in using established law and the judicial system to ensure the separation of church and state.

You are right.

The United States Supreme Court has torn down more Christian symbols than all the Moldovans combined.

Amazing that some members are comparing the ACLU that uses the country's judicial and legislative system and already established law to help maintain the separation of church and state, which is directly from the First Amendment, and the Supreme Court that has been discussing the issue for over a hundred years now, to anti-Semitic acts by bigoted members of a particular religion, replacing the religious symbol of one religion, by another, while spewing their venom. Amazing how some people's logic works. Bigotry and judicial process...similar? Either way, what the Supreme Court or ACLU does in the US is irrelevant to what bigots do in Moldova, irrelevant.

It's too bad there were no Christians there who weren't ignorant and weak-willed, to rebuke these bigots.

The Metropolitan said he's going to investigate this. Were I in his shoes, I'd send that priest to a monastery for life, and keep him away from civilized people.

They are orthodox. Over here a Greek priest got really rich by charging money for weddings, christenings and he own a school as part of his church.

So religion is a business with volunteers where the leaders got rich/powerful.

Sometimes it is, but not often.

I know alot about orthodox (greek).
They seems to be very un-educated religious wise. They only follow what the priest says which is wrong. Hence orthodox religion is inferior than other christian religion.

I knew a Greek Orthodox priest who worked very hard to get his people educated and thinking for themselves. He claimed that strict obedience and submission are more marks of the Russian Orthodox, where not thinking is often treated as a virtue.

Most her probably don't know that some of the first and biggest cases the ACLU took on and became prominent for were defenses of religious freedom.

They went a number of decades without any of those, but they've taken it up again recently.

In the case of the recent barbarism in Moldova, the ACLU would be standing up for the Jews, which would be the proper position.

The Supreme Court tears down our Christian symbols and the towns put up Santa and Frosty.

Pitiful.

and second, what exactly happened to Jews in Moldova????

So we can be certain that this is not part of the larger media conflict?

Possibly because the palestine conflict has caused Israel to lose sympathy in the west?

I didn't want to divert too much from the topic at hand. If you want, I can have a private conversation about it.
