How serious of an invasion of privacy is this?

US city wants job applicants to hand over passwords for Internet groups

2 hours, 50 minutes ago

By Matt Gouras, The Associated Press

HELENA, Montana - Job applicants with the city of Bozeman are finding that their private Internet discussions and pictures may not be so private after all.

The city is asking job seekers for the user names and passwords to Internet social networking or Web groups they belong too. The decision is sparking an outcry from those who say the policy goes way too far.

The issue has spawned hundreds of comments on Web forums and sharp criticism from legislators and the ACLU.

"I liken it to them saying they want to look at your love letters and your family photos," said Amy Cannata, with the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana. "I think this policy certainly crosses the privacy line."

The city argues that it only uses the information to verify application information - and says it won't hold it against anyone for refusing to provide it. City officials say such checks can be useful, especially when hiring police officers and others in a position of public trust.

Bozeman officials have been hammered with emails and phone calls ever since KBZK-TV of Bozeman reported the policy on Wednesday, including an excerpt from the city application form that states "Please list any and all current personal or business Web sites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc."

Let me be the first to tell them they can go to hell. What's next, my bank account numbers and credit card info, to make sure I'm "fiscally responsible" as well?

I'm fairly certain that is an invasion of privacy, and as such, illegal.

Bullshit.

Pure and simple. Some idiot thought it was a good idea but it is bullshit

I mean really - what are the chances I'm going to put my Facebook password on a job application? Zero! And they would get a not safe for work eyefull of information if they are looking at Yahoo! groups!!! What information are they going to verify with that? - mostly fetishes. That would be funny if they considered my Messenger friends list as references actually.

Worst my company does is "google" our name to make sure nothing blatantly pops up that would break our compliance laws and I'm not totally comfortable with that.

my response would be simple. "go fuck yourself". then retain counsel and sue them into bankruptcy.

Sounds like they are just plain lazy to me. A lot of employers do a background on employees -- particularly in law enforcement. This city sounds like they are too lazy to use someone to simply do a background check and see if anything stands out.

Most employers can already check your criminal record, driving record, and credit. My personal accounts are just that -- what I want to be public is and what I don't want public isn't.

Isn't the obvious answer to create a phoney 'nice' online profile, then claim that's the only one you have.

Yeah, how fucking hard is that to get around? "I'm not on any online mesageboards." There, done.

Montana boys are hot though. I've had some fun with a certain senator's son and enjoyed time on the beach in Rehobeth with he and a couple friends from Montana!

But for the most part the olders are conservative.....

It's simple:

I have no memberships.

Let them prove otherwise.

It's odd but don't we already put our ssn's on some of the hiring paperwork? That's the part I'm really worried about.

I think you usually do the SSN bit so you can get paid.

As for this password bullshit, it's silly how they expected people to just list that information for them. Additionally, if there's no penalty for witholding the information, I don't get the whole point. Did they think people were that stupid? What's next?

"The next part of the application process for the short order cook position requires that you strip down and dance around a little while I take pictures. No, seriously! It does! ...Please?"

Hmm, that's a good point. Though I guess the same could be said of anyone who handles your credit card at a store. If they have a good enough memory they could jot the 12 hidden digits and the back code down after you leave and take the 4 on the receipt. Unsettling.
