honestly i would torture some people

but heck i live in Canada. and people like Olivia Ward would stop me. that woman is full of so much shit it must hurt her.

hell stephan harper would be the first on my list

My God, what`s up with America? Not one modern democratic country of this world (Europe,Canada,Australia...) has death penalty, likes torture, hates the word "liberal", ignores good politicans like Gore... I can`t understand your country. We learned a lot of the US in the past but today you should learn a lot of us. Oh good old America...

There is also the fact that many Americans, many of whom place much trust and faith in their country, are being mislead by the pro-torture advocates on the baseless, uncorroborated notion that those tortured are in fact terrorists.

Why would they say people are terrorists if they weren't terrorists? Don't you trust our leaders?

They showed trust in them is misplaced when there were no WMD's found. Now Dubya is suggesting a possible withdrawal from Iraq. Could he be thinking the troops might be needed against North Korea?

We've temporarily lost our way .... highjacked by the Righteous Right ..... but have no fear, those bums will be shown the door in a little over two weeks from now. ..|

Thirty six per cent in favour, SIXTY FOUR percent are opposed. That means nearly twice as many are opposed to torture when compared to those in favour.

I am against the use of torture to gain confessions. I would not even agree with it if it was used to gain denials! Apart from the inhumane physical abuse inevitably used, what I really find obscene is that information used under such forms of interrogation can to be used against a person, and any others he may have "incriminated" to save his own skin.

The use of such evidence is contrary to every justice system in the western world. It is regarded as "tainted evidence".

If you want to corrupt a justice system, just start using tainted evidence.

The question must always be asked, if you use it for one set of suspects, why not use it for all at an Abu Ghraib near you.

people are making it out like its pointless torture! it says ont ehre that it was asked torture for terrorists to get infomation to save lives! so i think to a certain extent its ok! but then again not terrible torture! dont go Hostel on there ass!

It is only a presumption that they are terrorists;

this is were you get people who dont understand things at all!

if the goverment let all these people free who are assumed to be terrorists then peole would say how dangerous that is, but if they keep them then they decide to say how unfair it is!

if they let them free becasue people say that there not defently terrorists and then they go do something bad then people will forget that they aggreed with letting them go and would blame the goverment! because for some reason most people like to miss see things and blame the goverement!

first id like to say george bush doesnt act on whims he acts to try and keep things safe. everyone seems to hate him now for some strange reason, his was on terrorism is good thing if you look at it right, Afganastan he invaded and cut out abit of al quedo and made it harder for them so thats good! then he invaded iraq which is good because, one, it got rid of saddam and two it also helped getting these terrorist groups stuck a bit more.

They wouldnt imprison a person without at least a tiny hint that he could be a terrorist! people make out like they just take people of the street but they dont just do that. they get people who are or could be a risk, if they are innocent then thats not good but theres a reason they were misjudged int he first place.

its just noone ever gets to hear all the truth because everyones always more busy trying to get rid of him instead of listneing to him.

if he belives that a good way to find out infomation is by torture then obviously its a well thought idea and isnt just a whim to do it but for a reasonable reason, if just one terroist got caught by doing this then its worth while because it means more saftey for innocent people.

People say all these things abouthe lied about saddam but they ethier did generally thinkt here was WOMD or they just wanted to get rid of saddam, and doing ethier of those is good. and any person who thinks it wasnt is just a sad little idiot going againast it just to start an argument.

Tortureing dose not work, with all we have today why do we need to torture for information. Torture did not work in vetiman and it will not work any where. [-X

its far to late to give a reply to each of those! im not giving up i will be back tomorow,s o you knwo im nto ignoring you!

but living in england i have an outside view of america and what hes doing and unfortunetly you americans arnt smart enough to see that you have the best president ever and you stupidly decide to want rid of him!

Another thing is even if saddam didnt have weapons and all, HE WAS TORTUING FOR NO REASON AND KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE, i put it in capslock because i dont think it gets thorugh to people that saddam wasnt actaully a very nice person! you all seem to forget that he killed so many for no reason, if you say george bush is a murderer then at least you can say hes killing for a war against bad, unlike saddam who killed for the dam fun of it!

anyway tarar for now! :)

I bet if a correlation study was done on this thirty-six percent of Americans they'd find that 100% of them couldn't find their home town on a map.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what these morons think.

I couldn't agree more Inwood. You are very perceptive.

If [George W. Bush] believes that a good way to find out information is by torture then obviously it’s a well thought idea …

Everyone seems to hate [George W. Bush] now for some strange reason …

I don’t think they necessarily hate “the guy;” it’s just that some people (me included) do not think there is any acceptable excuse to use torture as a routine screening method in order to obtain possibly-useful information.

Maybe if there truly was a “ticking bomb” scenario, I’d be first-in-line to beat a few secrets outta the fucker, but I would also accept responsibility for having crossed-over the line of decency and I would most-certainly anticipate an appropriate punishment for my infraction.

The use of torture as a matter of routine, judicially-inconsequential, and fundametally-sanctioned policy is blatantly incorrect. [-X

THE VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE

It is amazing to observe and read postings that supposed to impart anything with the underlying notion that somehow that we are known for" freedom of expression".It could be about torture, war, terrorism, democracy, freedom and peace.I often wonder if when someone discuss a topic, participate on it,say something about it ,that they know the definition or what that word means or just a random selections of thoughtless words just for the sake of expressing an opinion.
Torture-any act by which severe pain, whether physical or psychological,is intentionally inflicted on a person as means of intimidation, deterrence, revenge, punishment, sadism, information gathering,or to obtain false confessions for propaganda or political purposes.
You don't have to worry since you are not involve, nor a family member,a friend, partner or love ones, its someones else right? Its okay, your understood, since you did not understand the word anyway.
An act of terrorrism-means any activity that involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human life that is a violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or OF ANY STATE(COUNTRY) and appears to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion and to affect the conduct of a government by assassination or kidnapping(United States Code Congressional and administrative news).
You don't have to worry. You are not blown to pieces in the name of freedom and democracy. You can flaunt what material things you have, since you are not starve death. You don't have to worry you are westernized, civilized? not traumatized.
War and peace are just talking points right.War is for bad people and we are peaceloving. We tried to obtain what we called peace,by bombing, slaughtering, dismantling and raping a 14 year old Iraqi girl then kill her and the rest of her family execution style because they are bad people. We are proud,to wage war because they are bad people right?Oh,our favorite line, they are casualties of war right?
You don't have to worry since they are not related to you, they are related to terrorist right? They are not your mother, father, sister, brother, friends or partner. At the end of the day when you realized about your guilt ,you feel numb and nothing because you don't know and you don't understand and you don't care.
The beauty of the virtue of ignorance is no matter how evil your thought and actions were, you can always relieved yourself of not knowing a thing.

Please note that the very description that you give, the 'ticking bomb' scenario, might well earn you a place amongst those who 'support torture', according to this thread.

The two choices in the survey are between "some degree of torture if it may gain information that saves innocent lives" and "any use of torture is immoral". Those two wordings leave little room in between for your extreme conditions type description, which seems a fairly reasonable one.

Here's the actual question posed, for what it's worth:
