More oil spilled in Nigeria "every year than has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico"

i have no doubts that this is happening. but the number seems a bit high. that would be quite a lot of money, and the companies would try to keep that oil.

Yeah but this one (the mexican oil) hasn't been spilling for a year yet, has it? So it could still beat the nigerian oil.

well, it's not really a contest. It is more about most people not even knowing about this spill, especially in the US. Since we get so much of our crude from that country....it would be especially wrong of us not to try and correct this problem.

We really need to decrease out dependence on oil. These disasters are just going to get worse and worse as they have to go to more difficult places to get it.

I read an optimistic article by McClatchy Newspapers about the 1979 Ixtoc 1 oil spill in the Bay of Campeche. That one had 30,000 barrels a day spilling into the gulf for 10 months.

From the article:

"To be honest, considering the magnitude of the spill, we thought the Ixtoc spill was going to have catastrophic effects for decades ...But within a couple of years, almost everything was close to 100 percent normal again.''

I question the sources of that article.

Nigeria only provides about 10% of U.S. oil imports. Canada is the U.S.'s biggest supplier, and even then Canada only provides about 17%.

So, to say that 40% of U.S. oil is from Nigeria? Utter bullshit. That article probably has more flaws, given how off the numbers are.

great.

now we are comparing ourselves to nigeria to make it feel better that we have fucked the planet and left lubestains on the carpet.

I was hoping we would aim a little higher.

the quote may be incorrect. I think they meant that 40% of the production from Nigeria goes to the US. According to the US Energy web site:

"Nigeria is an important oil supplier to the United States. Over half of the country’s oil production is exported to the United States (see exports below) and the light, sweet quality crude is a preferred gasoline feedstock."

"In 2008, Nigerian exported most of its 2.17 million bbl/d of oil production (approximately 1.9 million bbl/d were exported). Of this, 990,000 bbl/d (44 percent) was exported to the United States, making Nigeria the 5th largest foreign oil supplier to the United States. "

And I still think that we should not ignore the damage that the oil companies are making in that country.
